Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Rullan.

Marissa, a curly hair specialist apprentice, offers haircuts, Rake and Shake Curly Blow Drys and Blowouts.  She is based in trendy Santa Monica and offers some pretty unbeatable pricing (such as haircuts for just $20).  She’s a UCLA grad on a mission.  In her own words, “The cost of a haircut by my salon’s stylists is $135 whereas my services are only $20, I earned my BA in Gender Studies at UCLA where I chose to focus my studies and research on the beauty industries and the effects certain images reprinted in our culture affect women. This is why I chose to specialize in curly hair. I want to empower women to feel beautiful as they are and enhance the hair that they have rather than try to change it.”

She mentioned how many women feel pressured to straighten their hair prior to interviews because they feel their natural hair is unprofessional. “We need to change the vocabulary about curls,” Marissa movingly tells us, “because we need to change attitudes so that every woman can feel comfortable being herself.  We cannot allow our euro-centric world to push women into feeling like their natural state is inferior.”  We couldn’t agree more and are so proud to feature a hairstylist with such an important social mission.
