Today we’d like to introduce you to Vicky Wang.

Vicky Wang

Hi Vicky, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi! I’m Vicky Wang, a Background Designer working in the animation industry. I’ve always been passionate about art and design since childhood. The animated characters and illustrative environments are extremely captivating to me. I could easily lose track of time engrossed in graphic novels and animated series, a love that has only intensified over the years.

Even back in elementary school, my love for art has never faded as I constantly found myself sketching and doodling in the margins of my textbooks. Every spare page in my notebooks became a canvas for me to illustrate and express my creativity.

After I moved to the States in high school, I had the opportunity to dive deeper into my artistic pursuits by enrolling in advanced art classes. My school counselor and teachers encouraged and recommended me to take classes at ArtCenter, which held some professional art training for high schoolers. My enthusiasm for art grew drastically during that time, compelling me to apply to ArtCenter for further studies, eventually solidifying my commitment to a lifelong journey in the world of art and design.

From those early days of sketching in elementary school to pursuing professional training at ArtCenter, my love for art has always been a strong force pushing me toward my ultimate goal in the animation industry

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey at ArtCenter was not as smooth as I expected. I was surprised by the variety of art genres and career options, making it difficult to choose a specific path. Being surrounded by so many creative individuals, I struggled with uncertainty about my ability and future direction. Peer pressure and indecision were the main obstacles I faced.

However, the diversity of artistic styles also presented unique opportunities for growth. I could explore the world of art and think deeply about my artistic goal. I embraced the chance to explore various forms of art and experiment with different mediums, eventually discovering my profound passion for digital art.

The presence of the talented peers became both a challenge and an invaluable source of inspiration. Rather than pressure, their work served as motivation for my personal growth, encouraging me to push my boundaries and continuously challenge myself. In the competitive environment, I not only learned how to live with the challenges but also found my unique voice within the realm of digital art.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in background design, where I create the environments and locations that serve as the stage for compelling narratives. My work extends from intricate line art to vibrant painting, capturing the essence of a story through thoughtfully designed composition and lighting.

One aspect that sets my work apart is the consciousness of details. I start my projects by doing tons of research. Every element in my art is designed with careful consideration and adaption of reference. The commitment to detail not only emphasizes the visual design but also contributes to the overall storytelling, making the environment more reliable for the narrative and more visually appealing.

Furthermore, I take pleasure in adapting my skills to suit a diverse range of styles, ranging from realistic cityscapes to fantastical lands. My portfolio includes not only delicate buildings but also natural landscapes. This versatility in styles allows me to provide a unique perspective for each of my pieces.

In terms of what I’m most proud of, it’s the ability to evoke emotions and convey the mood through my artwork. I create environments that resonate with the audience, establishing an emotional connection that enhances the storytelling elements of my work.

What’s next?
For the future, I would definitely keep learning and getting better at art. Taking art classes and doing plein-air studies are important to improve my skills. Learning art is a lifelong journey, and I still have a lot to discover.
