Rising Stars: Meet Suzanne Jamieson of Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzanne Jamieson

Hi Suzanne, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I found my way into Family Music quite on accident! I was an actor in NY and LA for years, focusing mostly on musical theatre but also on plays, film, commercials, print, etc. During that time, for supplemental income, I became a yoga teacher and eventually a yoga therapist. When I had my first child, I was looking for a lullaby album to play for her and could not find exactly what I was looking for. So, I decided to make it! That album was called “Shine: Lullabies for Everyone.” In the next few years, I had my second child, and conceived of an idea of making children’s music that incorporated all the postitive psychology, yoga philosophy, and tools for happiness that I had learned over the years. I wrote the lyrics for my next album, collaborated with The Pop Ups (a children’s music band out of NYC) and we created “Bounce,” which was released in 2020. In 2022, I was finding myself increasingly disturbed by the vitriol, hate, and division that seemed to be either increasing or just unearthed in our country, so I decided to create an album that focused on Love in its many forms and expressions. That album, “Love Is…” was released in July (’24).

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think any road toward success is ever smooth. I took a leap of faith, in the first place, that I could even write music at all. I just decided to try it, without any indication that I’d actually be any good at it. Being open to collaboration and finding positive and supportive mentors has made all the difference to me. I released my album “Bounce” only a few months into COVID, so it did not have the touring life that I’d imagined for it. I am finally doing live shows now featuring music from “Bounce,” my new album, “Love Is…”, and my holiday singles. I love it!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am best known for my positive, upbeat pop music for kids that incorporates mindfulness and optimism into the lyrics without kids necessarily realizing it. My songs are highly produced and meant to satisfy the adult listeners as well. Truly family music is my goal. I am proud that I was able to write songs that really speak to a child’s experience of life, and to point them towards attitudes and actions that will increase their quality of life and self-esteem, but just sound really fun and radio-quality. I am proud that many of my songs have been featured on Sirius XM’s Kids Place Live, and that I’ve won many awards for my music including NAPPA, Creative Child Album of the Year, Moms Choice, Kids Choice, Parents Choice, Kids First Endorsement, and others.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success, to me, is setting out to do a thing, and doing it to your best ability. You cannot control what people think of it or what happens to it once it is out there in the world. What you can control is the work that you do. And if you do it with love, with heart, with openness, and with pride, then I think that is a true success.
