Today we’d like to introduce you to Sklaerenn Lorand.
Sklaerenn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started photography over 15 years ago by shooting musical theater productions in Paris, where I met several French actors and singers who became friends and encouraged me to believe in myself and pursue a career in photography. While still in high school, I had the opportunity to go on tour with musical shows, and it was an incredible experience. I loved photographing both the performances and the behind-the-scenes moments. Each of these experiences inspired me to attend Icart Photo School in Paris to further develop my skills.
I’ve worked with many well-known French artists such as Christophe Maé, Cécilia Cara, and David Ban, and collaborated on projects with several French directors, including Julien Seri and Adam Phénix, notably on a commercial spot featuring world champion athlete Ladji Doucouré. I’ve also had the privilege of working with many international stars such as Ian Somerhalder, Millie Bobby Brown, Chad Michael Murray, Robert Knepper, Noah Schnapp and more as the official photographer for People Con’.
It’s actually thanks to People Con’ that I came to Los Angeles, as the company decided to expand into the United States. Los Angeles had always been a dream of mine. As someone who is passionate and fully committed to everything I do, I have so many ideas and ambitions in this city that I love deeply. It’s a city that inspires me in every way, and the light here is just incredible.
I am proud to have worked alongside Steven LaMorte, David Howard Thornton, and Tyler Posey for the film Screamboat, an amazing horror film that will be released next April. We filmed in Staten Island, and I was responsible for all the BTS photography.
On another note, which remains closely connected to photography, I have a deep love for nature and animals. I love exploring the world, especially the many extraordinary national parks in the United States. In France, I was able to exhibit some of my photos taken during my numerous travels here, and I hope to one day have the opportunity to exhibit my work in Los Angeles as well.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it hasn’t always been a smooth road.
In the world of photography, two things have been particularly challenging for me. The first is making a name for myself in such a competitive industry, where confidence plays a big role. This leads to my second challenge: self-confidence. It has probably been my biggest weakness, and it’s something I’m still working on today.
It hasn’t always been easy, but my determination has helped me move forward, along with my personal motto: “Never give up.”
As for achieving my dream of moving to Los Angeles, the most difficult part was, of course, obtaining a visa. It was a long and challenging process, but I truly believe that when you work hard and stay committed to your goals, things can fall into place. Thanks to my work with People Con and their projects, everything eventually worked out.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in entertainment photography. My journey began in France, working in the world of concerts, theater, and music videos. Since moving to Los Angeles, I’ve had the opportunity to explore film sets, a direction I truly want to develop further.
My experience on the film Screamboat and the short film Always and For Never was a real revelation: my behind-the-scenes photos were published in media outlets such as the New York Post and SFX magazine. Seeing my work support the promotion of these projects in such iconic publications is a great source of pride for me.
Another collaboration that means a lot to me is the one with Cécilia Cara. When I was 8 years old, I admired her in Roméo & Juliette; today, I’ve had the chance to photograph her concerts, and despite my move to Los Angeles, we have stayed in touch. Going from the little girl who admired her to the professional photographer who now works with her is what makes me most proud.
More recently, I worked on the series Tell Me Mode with Annabelle Kajbaf, which led to publications in Glamour US, Teen Vogue, and soon Elle Canada. I also enjoy exploring the more artistic side of my work, such as my recent shoot for the Bowers Museum and my upcoming project for the French in Fashion runway show at the Residence of the French Consul in Beverly Hills.
I believe it’s my sensitivity and my desire for each image to tell a story. I’m often told that I have the ability to see everything while remaining discreet.
During the studio shoot for Screamboat, director Steven LaMorte told me that I had captured moments he hadn’t even noticed himself. I think my greatest strength is knowing how to blend into the background, capture raw emotion, and respect the creative process and rhythm of the set.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Never hesitate to ask for help or advice. You can always learn something from every person and every experience. Personally, I rely a lot on my intuition and feelings, and I believe it’s important to stay true to yourself.
Networking and mentorship are valuable and can be a great source of inspiration, but in the end—especially in the artistic field—I believe an artist is shaped through their experiences, successes, and challenges.
Where I am today is the result of both my determination and the support of those who believed in me. Networking isn’t just about professional connections; it’s about building genuine relationships and staying open to opportunities. Trusting the journey and being open to encounters can sometimes completely change your path.
Every experience, good or bad, is a lesson. Even when things are difficult, you should never give up—every mistake helps you grow, and the future is always full of surprises.
