Rising Stars: Meet Scott Slaughter of Sherman Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Slaughter.

Hi Scott, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My podcast journey begins in bed (as so many do, right?). My girlfriend had just taken a podcasting class, and one night she turned to me while we were watching TV and said something to the effect of, “I’m thinking about actually making this podcast. If I do, would you be my producer?” Up until then, my background was primarily outdoor-sport-oriented, skiing, rock climbing, and fly-fishing. I knew absolutely nothing about podcasts, let alone producing. But for whatever reason, I said yes. Our podcast, Only One In The Room, launched in April of 2019 and almost instantly became a sensation. Today, we have over six and a half million downloads and have been ranked among the top .1% of all podcasts. After my partner’s writing career took off last year, we paused Only One In The Room, and I started producing other podcasts. My client roster is diverse, with podcast topics ranging from wellness to grief to family matters.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I knew that launching a business that launches podcasts would be a lot of work. Taking a client’s idea and turning it into something tangible (and hopefully profitable) requires patience, as there are many steps between the dead lift and the lift off. My job is to provide guidance and options, and to produce the best-quality audio product possible. That means hours on the phone with vendors; graphic designers for key art, composers for original music, and of course, my post-production supervisor, Caelan Beign, to ensure that r63 podmedia delivers something that both our client and their listeners will love.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I think what sets me apart from other podcast producers is how much I love storytelling. When I agree to take on a client, it’s because there is a great story there. During the initial interview, I encourage them not only to pitch their idea, but to tell me the story behind it. To me, that’s the best part, not just getting massive downloads (which is always desirable) but bringing these stories to life.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, it was almost like I was two different kids. One of whom loved things like kayaking, competitive swimming, and fishing. But then there was another kid who was more on the mischievous side, always getting in trouble in school, who may or may not have enjoyed a joyride or two. I was also the kid who could float from group to group. I got along with the jocks and the stoners. My taste in music was just as eclectic, everything from Public Enemy to Elton John.
