Rising Stars: Meet Robert DiCaro of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert DiCaro

Hi Robert, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Ever since I was 7 years old and given my first camera from my grandfather I knew what I wanted to do. To me photos and video are wormholes to the past invoking emotions. I’ve had the chance to work on everything from AAA music videos to commercials for brands like Nike, Adidas, and Sephora. After earning my film degree from Fullsail University and then attened acting training for Meisner, to better under how to bring the script to the scree.

For over a decade, I’ve worn many hats—Director, Director of Photography (DP), and 1st Assistant Camera (1st AC)—on a variety of feature films and projects. My work often delves into themes like curiosity, Sci-fi desire, trauma, and human self-discovery, all with a bit of existential humor thrown in.

Whether I’m working on a film or a commercial, I strive to bring depth, creativity, and a touch of humor to everything I do. Storytelling through visuals is what I love, and I aim to make each project resonate.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been the smoothest road, but what road doesn’t have construction every couple of hundred miles? Over the years, I’ve faced various challenges. Like many, the pandemic significantly slowed down production, and the bounce back has been tough due to strikes affecting various essential departments in our industry. It seems like the film world is still trying to find its bearings again.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in bringing emotional depth to the screen, focusing on finding and tugging at the heartstrings. This expertise comes from years of learning not just the technical aspects of filmmaking but also how to connect deeply with actors and scripts. My goal is to uncover and bring to life the underlying emotions that make a story resonate.

What sets me apart is my blend of empathy and creativity, coupled with a strong technical background. I think outside the box to bring unique perspectives and innovative solutions to the table. My experience with various camera effects, angles, and lighting—acquired from working on shows, movies, and music videos—enables me to execute ideas effectively and enhance the storytelling experience.

Being able to see a shot and knowing how they technically can be accomplished.

I’m known for always have a film or video camera with me or in my car, because i love the candid inbetween moments of life.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
It’s not a sprint or a marathon—it’s a triathlon. Each new year brings fresh challenges and tasks, and the key is to keep moving forward. You have to stay resilient and keep pushing, no matter what obstacles come your way.

Sometimes, productions might try to take advantage by offering a small commitment to get you on board, then asking for much more once you’re fully invested. It’s important to stand your ground and know your worth. Maintaining your boundaries won’t compromise the art; in fact, it can enhance it and lead to even greater creativity.
