Rising Stars: Meet Rakim Alnur of Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rakim Alnur.

Hi Rakim, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The journey for me started back in Albuquerque ,NM where I started rapping in High School and made a name for myself battle rapping and dropping songs on soundcloud. When I was 18 I got tired of rapping on youtube beats and hearing people in my city with the same beat, so I began to produce my own beats and have been ever since. With the status I had obtained I started to open up for artists such as: Mr. Carmack, Sango, Doja Cat, & Tommy Genesis and building a support base/ fanbase. I felt like I had hit a ceiling in my state after a year of doing these shows so in 2019 I had moved out of the state and started my own label Scutty Records with my fellow artist Khalisol. I feel like I have gone so far but still have so much more work to put in, blessed to have the success I had but ready and willing to create more moments.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been super challenging but it comes with the rewarding moments that keep you working and motivated, just enough haha. I’ve dealt with things like self-doubt, feeling like an imposter, and even being afraid of what others will say or think if the music isn’t hitting as hard as I think. I’ve dealt with the other sides such as bad contracts, people taking advantage of you not having knowledge of the business, and even people stealing ideas. Sometimes things like this get discouraging but if you remember that no one can re-create your story you just charge it to the game.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a songwriter/ producer/ music artists/ entrepreneur. I run an independent label named Scutty Records based in Los Angeles that specializes in distribution, music publishing, and marketing. I Rakim Alnur am known for being a very energetic artist with a unique voice that compliments an experimental sound. I am also known for writing the 2019 K-pop hit by Super M named Jopping (also created the word). I am most proud of my label and my team because we are approaching the music business in a different way with our DIY approach, specialized merchandise, unique music, and relentless content. What sets me apart from others is that I really don’t have much talent, I’m not a natural musician or singer but my work ethic and hustle has helped me create a lane and identity for myself and my team without watering down the vision.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
The best thing to me is the vibe overall, Cali has so much love in it and I’ve experienced but love from this place. The thing I like the least would probably be the traffic lol.
