Rising Stars: Meet Pooja Batra of New York

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pooja Batra.

Hi Pooja, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My Story — From a Love for Flowers to Floral Concepts by Pooja Batra

My journey with flowers began more than 25 years ago, long before social media, online shopping and the world of Instagram floristry.

I was drawn to flowers not simply because they were beautiful, but because I loved what they could make people feel. A bouquet could celebrate a beginning, bring comfort during a difficult time, make a home feel special or turn an ordinary occasion into a memory.

That fascination slowly became a profession.

I started my own floral retail business and spent around 15 years working hands-on with flowers, clients, celebrations and everything that goes into creating beautiful floral experiences. I learned the business from the ground up — sourcing flowers, understanding seasons, working with clients, creating arrangements, managing deliveries, handling vendors and, most importantly, understanding that every customer has a story behind why they are buying flowers.

Over the years, the floral industry changed dramatically. The traditional retail model was no longer enough, and I found myself adapting to a new world of online orders, social media and personalised floral styling.

That became the new beginning of Floral Concepts by Pooja Batra post Covid era.

I took everything I had learnt over the years and created a more personal, curated approach to floristry — beautiful flowers for homes, celebrations, gifting, weddings, festivals and the little moments in between.

Today, Floral Concepts is not about simply selling flowers.

It is about ‘curating an experience.’

From a thoughtfully designed bouquet to wedding floral jewellery, maalas, festive flowers, gift wrapping, trousseau packaging, subscriptions and personalised floral styling, every piece carries my aesthetic and my personal touch.

Alongside this, I created **Blooming Artistry by Pooja Batra**, where I share what I have learnt through years of working with flowers. Through workshops, I teach people that flower arranging isn’t just about putting flowers into a vase. It is about proportion, colour, movement, balance, mechanics and, above all, developing your own eye.

My journey has not been a straight line.

There have been changing markets, financial challenges, reinvention, periods when I had to start again and moments when I questioned what came next. But flowers kept bringing me back to what I know, what I love and what I am good at.

After more than two decades in this world, I still get excited when I see beautiful flowers.

And perhaps that is the real story.

I didn’t simply build a flower business.

I built a life around flowers — one arrangement, one client, one celebration and one new beginning at a time.

And I am still creating.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey hasn’t been easy. I faced the challenges of running a small business, changing customer preferences, financial ups and downs, adapting from traditional retail to the digital world, and having to reinvent myself several times. There were moments of uncertainty and self-doubt, but my love for flowers and determination to keep going helped me turn every setback into a new beginning.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialise in creating thoughtfully curated floral experiences for homes, celebrations, weddings, gifting and special occasions. With 25+ years in floristry, I’m known for my personalised approach, elegant aesthetics and ability to create something that feels unique to each client.

I’m particularly proud of building my business independently and continuing to reinvent myself as the industry has evolved. What sets me apart is that I don’t just “arrange flowers” — I understand flowers, people and the emotion behind every occasion. I bring experience, creativity and a very personal touch to every arrangement.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something that may surprise people is that behind the polished floral arrangements is a very hands-on, self-made journey. I’ve spent 25+ years learning floristry from the ground up, and I still personally get involved in the smallest details—from choosing flowers to designing arrangements and understanding what a client really wants.

People often see the finished beauty, but not the years of experimentation, reinvention, hard work and persistence behind it. And yes—I’m still as excited about beautiful flowers as I was when I started!
