Today we’d like to introduce you to Phia Sucevich
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a professional dancer working all around Southern California. However, I first started dancing in Oregon, a small studio outside Portland. I have been dancing since I was 3 and haven’t been able to stop because of how much joy and community it brings me. My love for this art brought me to LA when I was 17 to get my degree in Commercial dance. Now with that done, I have been able to perform on so many wonderful stages and also in front of the camera, My work includes music videos, live performances, commercials, and more. I am so blessed to be doing what I love every day!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road, I would say it’s been a rollercoaster. The highs and lows of the dance industry are something that every artist will experience. It’s something we learn early on in our career, I would say it’s a part of the journey. Auditions are a huge event, and they’re not always a promised gig. I would say that is the most “difficult” part of being a dancer, however, it’s what we know and love to do.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I think what sets me apart from other dancers is my vast training in Tap Dance. Not every dancer can Tap and over the years it’s becoming less common of an art. The importance of this style resonates with me, I think Tap Dance needs to be more represented in the industry today. I try to bring the feel and rhythm of Tap into every style I do and it brings me joy every time.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I think what most people don’t know about me is that I’m also an Aerialist, I don’t get to train as often as I used to but I’m trying to get that side of my art out more because it’s a large part of who I am. It has built so much strength into my body, I primarily work with Silks and the Hoop, but I have trained in other instruments as well. Because of that the rest of my dancing is stronger and I’m more confident in my art.
