Rising Stars: Meet Nathan J. Lee of Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan J. Lee

Hi Nathan J. , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey in entertainment began with a deep passion for storytelling, which led me from serving in the Army, where I honed leadership and project management skills, to pursuing filmmaking at The Los Angeles Film School. Writing has always been at the heart of my goal to bring stories to life visually.
I started in independent filmmaking, collaborating with creatives to build a network, and later transitioned into directing music videos—one of which landed on VEVO, solidifying my presence in the industry. I also graduated from the Community Literature Initiative, where I further developed my skills as a poet.
My short films have earned multiple awards and recognition, including a licensing deal with Future Today.
Currently, I am focused on creating opportunities for emerging talent through my work as a filmmaker and journalist. I’m also developing a news platform to spotlight up-and-coming artists, filmmakers, and creatives. My journey has been one of continuous growth, adaptation, and boundary-pushing across the entertainment industry, driven by a relentless pursuit of new ways to tell stories and elevate voices.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges in the entertainment business is mastering structure and understanding the business side. Transitioning from the disciplined environment of the Army to the unpredictable world of filmmaking required me to learn how to navigate an industry where success often hinges on building relationships, seizing opportunities, and being in the right place at the right time.

Breaking into the industry without traditional connections was another major struggle. I knew no one and started with zero knowledge—I didn’t even learn how to use a camera until six months into my film degree. As an independent filmmaker, I had to find ways to fund my projects, build a network from scratch, and constantly prove my skills and vision. There were countless moments of rejection and failed projects, but those setbacks taught me resilience and persistence.

Balancing creative expression with the business side of entertainment has always been challenging, and at times, I felt directionless. Yet, I kept pushing forward—creating, producing, and taking action. I believe this industry rewards those who persevere, the ones who stay in the game, even through setbacks and losses.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a versatile filmmaker who can do anything behind the camera, working as a writer, producer, director, 1AD, cinematographer, gaffer, or editor. My focus is on Black queer storytelling, and I specialize in bringing beautiful and local voices to the forefront. I’m known for my ability to get things done, even with limited resources, and for pushing through challenges without giving up. What I am most proud of is my resilience—continuing to show up and make work that I believe in, regardless of the obstacles. What sets me apart is my commitment to making decisions today that I’ll be proud of years from now, ensuring my projects have a lasting impact.

What does success mean to you?
Success, for me, is about sustainability—creating a lasting impact with the work I produce. It’s not just about achieving short-term recognition or financial gain but building something that continues to grow and evolve over time. Success means being able to sustain my creative projects, my production company, and my vision, while staying true to my values. It is about making decisions today that will stand the test of time and ensuring that the stories I tell remain relevant, resonant, and impactful in the long run.
