Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Mcneil.
Hi Michael, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When I was about 13 years old, my older cousin played me a video where he played two different characters at the same time, and at 13 years old that was fascinating, funny and I questioned to myself how did he do that, and from then on I wanted to create similar videos like that. When I was of age to work (I was 14 & nine months) that summer I saved up enough money to buy my first camera from Best Buy it was around $500. I forgot the name brand but it was one of those camcorders where you stick the tape in the side.
From then on, I try to re-create things I’ve seen on tv, shows like “fear factor,” horror films and romantic comedies. My path wasn’t always clear on wanting to be in the film industry. I just enjoyed filming and creating things through video. Never thought I would moved to L.A. to try to fulfill that dream.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. I couldn’t afford go to school for film making, so it was challenging to learn how to do things I had to go through a lot of trial and error, watching a lot of “how to videos” on YouTube and reading film books. I was able to get with an editor that taught at Sheffield recording art studio in Baltimore and he gave some lessons on his own time that help me a lot.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a filmmaker/director. I specialize in commercial modeling and narrative storytelling. I’m most proud of doing what I love which is filming/directing.
What sets me apart from others is that my work is really clean and simple. I don’t use a lot of special effects in my filming; I stay practical as much as possible. I care More about how it’s shot before post-production. I don’t want special effects to make my films or videos but a balance between the talent and the shots I capture.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
No, I haven’t learned anything interesting due to covid-19
