Rising Stars: Meet Marilyn Rothman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marilyn Rothman.

Hi Marilyn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My belief is that I am most successful when I paint what I know and love. Having grown up in Southern California, my own art has naturally gravitated to the simple and abundant beauty around me.

My love of other people’s art has always been a constant. But my own artistic talent became apparent as an adult when I enrolled my young children in a “parent and child” art class. I soon found myself experimenting with different art mediums alongside my son and daughter, fascinated by the process and its rewards. When I discovered my love of painting in 2010, it quickly became my passion.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would say it’s been mostly a smooth road. Challenges along the way have been mostly self-imposed.

My work is varied and its scope is broad. It takes work to develop skills. Within my portfolio, I have landscapes, seascapes, pop art, animals, food, florals, and figurative art.

Instead of focusing on one or two areas as many artists do, my interests have forced me to develop in many areas.
It has been a rewarding but sometimes frustrating journey!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As an artist, my goal is to communicate with the viewer and share what inspires me. So, I have taken cues from what I see around me and that has taken me in many different directions.

In Los Angeles, I see great food, amazing landscapes, beautiful beaches and sunsets, adoring pets and interesting people. That is what I love to paint!

My work has been an exploration of acrylic and oil paints, light and form. I consider myself a colorist, mixing and layering paint to reveal the veil of colors beneath.

My career, passion and pride as an artist came later in life for me. In addition to painting, I hold a variety of degrees and have enjoyed several successful careers. As a young adult, I enjoyed working in the classroom as an Elementary School teacher and Reading Specialist, later completing a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration. I left the school system for another passion, parenting. As my children grew, I later found myself in the business world.

I paint what I love. My work has been featured in exhibitions and galleries and can be seen in private collections throughout the United States. My studio in Los Angeles is my sanctuary, a place where my surroundings inform my ongoing commitment to my art.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Painting what I love has been personally rewarding. When I paint, I am engrossed in the creative process and the hours fly by. I love the feeling of being “ lost” in my work.

Success for me is the process of creating something I am proud to share.
