Rising Stars: Meet Maggie Moon Berwick of Venice beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Moon Berwick.

Hi Maggie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My background is in hair color. I trained at the top salons in Beverly Hills and would fly to London to do hair color every few months. I always worked really hard and prioritized work always. I grew tired of hair color and how clients would change their mind about what color they wanted to have, people take everything out on their hair! Break up? Change their hair color. Not happy with work? Change their hair color etc

I then met my old boss, she had just opened her own brow studio in Beverly Hills and we knew each other from working in a salon together a few years back. I was done doing hair and decided to take a risk and change my career path and become a brow specialist.
I trained with her in Beverly Hills for 1 1/2 years, then went on the floor taking my own clients. In the 10 years since I’ve been doing brows, my work has been featured in multiple magazine covers, movies, tv shows etc

I really love what I do. Brows are so extremely transformative. They will anchor your face and add contrast. A 30 minute brow appointment can be more transformative than getting Botox and filler.

Good brows can help you look younger and bring life and symmetry to your face.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all lol
Trying to make it in the beauty industry in such a competitive city as LA, which is overly saturated with people getting licensed for hair or skin (estheticians) was hard!. I just had to believe in my own talent and work as hard as possible to show my commitment, dedication and belief that I could do it.

It pains me to say, that every woman I’ve ever worked for in this industry has let me down. Instead of nurturing my talent and being proud of me for making them as much money as I have, they always have felt in competition with me and inevitably have done something shady and/or disappointing. I’ve definitely learned what not to do! I am all about women and for women and only want to nurture, applaud and encourage my assistant and any other woman working in such a tough industry. I believe there is room and abundance for all of us and helping each other thrive is the only way. I want other women of color to see me and my behavior and feel inspired to help others and never operate from a place of scarcity. We are all powerful and should never be threatened by one another. Instead we should empower and support each other always.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a brow specialist. I specialize in helping others grow their brows back from over tweezing, over waxing or threading.

My clients leave their brows completely untouched for 4-6 weeks in between appointments. That helps me see their natural growth pattern and avoids different growth cycles from disturbing the natural growth flow of the brows. The more someone tweezes their brows randomly the more they are prolonging them from filling in as close as possible to the brows they had as kids or young adults, before they started grooming their brows.

I’m known for having an unfussy, natural approach to brows. I take i to consideration the persons style, lifestyle, how much or little make up they wear and of course what is the best and most flattering color and shape for their brows whilst leaving them as full and natural as possible. Doing less and working with the unique characteristics of someone’s brows is always more, in my opinion.

I’m extremely proud of my results. If people leave their brows alone and see me every 4-6 weeks their brows will grow in within a years time becoming super low maintenance and much more flattering for their face shape. What sets me apart from others is my passion for what I do, I really care that your brows become the anchor of your face, which results in you having to do less makeup everyday before work or errands, travel etc.
you also never leave my studio with unnatural, overly done brows. It is a pet peeve of mine to see extremely dark, ‘stamps’ for brows walking around the city. It’s simply dated and not flattering.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
In regards to luck or bad luck, I feel like I may have been at the ‘right place, at the right time’ a couple of times during my career, but luck hasn’t helped me keep the job. Or grow my clientele.

My work ethic, love for what I do, dedication and talent have helped me build and keep the clientele I have nurtured over the past decade, not luck.
