Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Tyus
Hi Leah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I spent several years feeling aimless and unsure about what I wanted to do. It wasn’t until I reflected on the activities that were life giving for me that I fully acknowledged my passion for writing.
While cultivating my skills as a writer, I was also developing my editing skills while working as a tutor. The work, while at times challenging, was always fulfilling. Knowing that I could use my talents to support the academic and personal goals of students fueled my work. Little did I know that the skills I would acquire as a tutor would one day serve me when I was recruited to work at USC.
I’m still figuring all the particulars of my life out — life’s a beautiful but nonlinear journey — but at this stage, I’m seeing all the pieces slowly coming together, and that’s been beautiful to witness.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Breaking into the literary world is challenging for a variety of reasons. However, I try not to let that those challenges overshadow my passion. I suppose I think of it as part of the process. It’s not ideal, but I’ll keep refining my process.
In terms of editing opportunities, I’ve been blessed to work with a team of highly talented professionals at USC. I’m growing and seeing improvement in my skills, and for me, that’s what it’s all about, growing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Senior Content Developer at USC with professional editing experience spanning close to a decade. I also have a few years of experience working as a freelance writer. I’ve serviced the editorial needs of distinguished universities like Stanford and San Jose State University and has written content for Grammarly, Inc.
When I’m not working in an editorial capacity, I delve into my creative works. I recently finished my MFA, where I completed a full length manuscript of my novel. It’s a work in progress, but the act of completing a full draft has given me the self-confidence to keep moving forward with it. To see where my works have been published, check out my LinkedIn!
