Rising Stars: Meet Juan Penial of Los Angeles / OC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Penial.

Hi Juan , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story is really one of passion, perseverance, family legacy, and perhaps a little bit of destiny.

I’ve always considered myself both an artist and a businessman. For much of my life, I balanced my entrepreneurial ambitions with an undeniable passion for the arts. After years of building and operating my own business, I made the decision to sell it approximately two and a half years ago, opening a new chapter in my life that would ultimately bring me closer to my artistic roots.

Creativity has always been deeply woven into my family’s history. Both my mother and father were singers and poets, so I grew up surrounded by music, storytelling, and artistic expression. I like to believe I inherited not only their appreciation for the written word and visual arts, but also their desire to communicate emotion through creativity.

I’ve been a visual artist for as long as I can remember, working across different artistic mediums while continuing to nurture my love for music. Throughout the years, I performed at social gatherings, community celebrations, and church events. Music was never something I abandoned; it was simply a passion that accompanied me throughout the different chapters of my life.

One of my greatest personal joys has been watching my son, known professionally as A1Fly, develop his own musical identity and achieve success in the industry. Witnessing his dedication and artistic growth has been incredibly inspiring. In many ways, it reinforced something I’ve always believed: artistic talent can transcend generations, but it’s the courage to pursue it that transforms talent into opportunity.

Then, in 2026, something rather unexpected happened.

While working as a graphic designer for Thump Records, my path crossed with Bill Walker, the company’s owner and son of Arthur “Art” Walker, the legendary founder associated with the historic Discos Fama record label. After Bill heard several of my personal recordings, he recognized something in my voice and artistic direction that he felt deserved a larger audience.

What began as a professional relationship in the visual arts unexpectedly evolved into a recording opportunity. Bill offered me a recording contract with Discos Fama, a label whose legacy is deeply embedded in the history of Latin music.

For those unfamiliar with its history, Discos Fama helped introduce and develop legendary acts such as Los Tigres del Norte and Bronco, artists who would eventually become internationally recognized names in Latin music. To find myself associated with a label carrying that kind of cultural and musical heritage is both humbling and incredibly meaningful.

Today, my relationship with Discos Fama extends beyond my own recording career. I also work in Artist and Repertoire (A&R) development alongside Paula Casas, who serves as my personal manager and leads the label’s Artist Management Division. Together, we’re involved in identifying, developing, and supporting emerging talent while contributing to the revitalization of a historic name in the recording industry.

What’s especially rewarding is that my experiences as an entrepreneur, visual artist, songwriter, and performer have finally converged. The business knowledge I acquired over the years now complements my creative ambitions, allowing me to approach the music industry from both an artistic and executive perspective.

I sometimes reflect on how interesting life’s timing can be. I spent years building businesses, creating art, raising a family, and performing simply because I loved music. I never imagined that a position as a graphic designer would ultimately lead to a recording contract with a label of such historical significance.

**I don’t necessarily see my story as someone starting a music career later in life. I see it as a lifetime of artistic experiences finally finding their moment.**

And perhaps that’s the most beautiful part of this journey. I’m not trying to reinvent who I am. I’m simply allowing the artist I’ve always been to take center stage.

For me, this isn’t the conclusion of a story. It’s the beginning of an exciting new chapter, one that I hope will honor the musical traditions that shaped me while creating something meaningful for generations to come.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Has it been a smooth road? I believe every artist’s journey comes with its share of highs and lows, and mine has certainly been no exception. The road to artistic fulfillment is rarely a straight line. It’s filled with moments of inspiration, uncertainty, reinvention, and, most importantly, personal growth.

One of the greatest challenges in artistry is finding the balance between staying true to your creative identity and navigating an entertainment industry that is constantly evolving. Talent and passion are essential, but I’ve learned that patience, perseverance, and the courage to believe in your own vision are equally important. There are times when your ambitions move faster than your opportunities, and those moments teach you the value of resilience.

As a singer, songwriter, and creative artist, I’ve come to appreciate that success isn’t measured solely by recognition, applause, or commercial achievements. It’s also measured by the ability to create something meaningful, to touch someone’s emotions through music, and to leave a lasting impression through your work.

I’ve always believed that artistry is more than entertainment. It’s storytelling, culture, tradition, and the preservation of emotions that connect generations. My appreciation for the timeless elegance of traditional Mexican music, combined with my desire to bring a fresh artistic perspective to it, has helped shape who I am today.

Fortunately, at this stage of my journey, I can genuinely say that the road has become much smoother. Not because the challenges have disappeared, but because I’ve developed a clearer understanding of who I am, what I want to accomplish, and the legacy I hope to create. Being associated with Discos Fama, a label with such a remarkable place in Latin music history, has also added a meaningful dimension to my artistic journey.

Today, I’m enjoying the creative freedom to explore my music, develop new projects, and connect with audiences in ways that feel authentic to me. I’m no longer concerned with rushing toward a destination. I’m appreciating the journey itself.

**If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the difficult roads often lead to the most beautiful destinations. And sometimes, the greatest success isn’t reaching the top — it’s arriving at a place in life where you genuinely love what you do.**

For me, that is where I am today. And I believe the most exciting chapters of my story are still waiting to be written.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m **Juan Penial**, a singer, songwriter, recording artist, and creative visionary with a passion for storytelling through music, culture, and artistic expression.

My work is deeply rooted in the rich traditions of Mexican music, particularly rancheras, boleros, mariachi, and corridos. I specialize in creating music that captures genuine human emotions—love, heartbreak, faith, perseverance, and the experiences that shape who we are.

I believe music should do more than entertain. It should tell a story, preserve a memory, awaken an emotion, and leave something meaningful behind.

As an artist associated with **Discosfama**, a historic record label whose legacy includes the early careers of legendary groups such as Los Tigres del Norte and Bronco, I’m proud to contribute to a musical tradition that has influenced generations. Being part of that legacy inspires me to honor the past while creating something new.

My creative work extends beyond singing and songwriting. I’m passionate about the complete artistic experience—from the lyrics and musical arrangements to visual storytelling, imagery, branding, and the presentation of each release. I approach every project with the belief that music, visual art, and cultural identity should complement one another.

**What am I most proud of?**

I’m most proud of developing my own artistic identity without compromising the traditions that inspire me. Songs such as *Tequila En Tu Pelo*, *El Tequila En Mi Dolor*, *Si Dios Me Quita La Vida*, and *Jefe De Mi* reflect my interest in telling different kinds of stories while maintaining a recognizable artistic voice.

I’m also proud of embracing modern creative technology while respecting traditional musical craftsmanship. I believe innovation and tradition can coexist beautifully when the intention behind the art remains authentic.

**What sets me apart?**

I don’t see myself as simply a singer who records songs. I see myself as a storyteller who creates complete artistic experiences.

My approach combines the romantic soul of traditional Mexican music, the visual elegance of another era, contemporary production techniques, and a deep appreciation for cultural heritage.

I’m not interested in following every musical trend. I’m interested in creating music with character, substance, and longevity—music that can connect with someone today and still carry meaning decades from now.

**Ultimately, I want my work to represent something greater than myself: a celebration of music, culture, tradition, and the power of a story told from the heart.**

For me, success isn’t simply about being heard. It’s about being remembered.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I’ve always believed that some of life’s greatest resources aren’t necessarily found in modern technology, but in the wisdom of the written word, history, and our own personal experiences.

I’m an avid reader and admirer of the Bible, which has remained one of my greatest sources of inspiration, reflection, and spiritual understanding. My fascination with spirituality, philosophy, and the deeper questions of human existence also inspired me to author a book titled *The Book of Life of the Lamb*, a work that reflects my personal exploration of faith, spiritual consciousness, and the human experience.

Over the years, I’ve explored various esoteric writings and philosophical perspectives, always driven by a natural curiosity to understand life beyond its surface. Although I no longer dedicate as much time to those particular studies, I believe the knowledge and perspectives I’ve encountered have contributed to my growth, both personally and creatively.

These days, much of my research has shifted toward music history, particularly the remarkable legacy of Discos Fama. Being part of a record label with such historical significance has inspired me to explore its origins, its pioneering artists, and the cultural impact it made on Latin music.

I’m especially fascinated by the stories behind the music: the visionaries who recognized talent before the world did, the artists who helped shape entire genres, and the circumstances that transformed modest beginnings into extraordinary legacies.

For me, researching Discos Fama is more than professional development. It’s an opportunity to better understand the foundation of an institution I’m now fortunate enough to represent and contribute to its continuing story.

Ultimately, I believe the most valuable resource anyone can possess is an open and inquisitive mind. Whether I’m studying scripture, exploring history, writing, creating visual art, or composing music, I’m constantly looking for ways to expand my understanding and translate that knowledge into something meaningful.

**Books can provide wisdom, history can provide perspective, and faith can provide direction. But it’s what we do with that knowledge that ultimately defines who we become.**
