Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordyn Carter.
Hi Jordyn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started off dancing for the Golden State Warriors NBA for four years. One day I decided to try out music for fun, Nikki Minaj was and still is my favorite artist so it was fun to record since she was such an inspiration to me. After recording my first song, “Like Me” at the age of 15 I fell in love with music. The feeling I felt on stage as an artist was different than when I was a dancer. Soon after, my artistry branches out far beyond just music; My professional talents ranging from Influencer, acting, dancing and modeling.
My hit-single Let’s Get It – in two national commercial placements. Degree Deodorant’s new “for women” line, Invisalign clear liners.
Touring all over with Black college expo, performances alongside my mentor Queen of west coast YoYo, Jamie fox house, BET weekend, Celebrity basketball games and more.
Appeared on Love and Hiphop season 6 and a few films and commercials.
I am now a 2x charting recording artist. Verified on all social medias with almost 1 million followers on TikTok with over 15 million likes and approaching 200k on Instagram. Currently working on new music.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t been smooth, coming from the Bay Area it was very hard to get acknowledged. Most of my success came when I started to go to Los Angeles to work. There are so many females in the music industry that Is doing “more” than I am willing to do. So it’s taking longer for me to reach my goals.
In this industry, you have to have certain look, dress a certain way and “fit in” with what is the “Now” to be noticed.
I am a darker skin female so it is harder for me in the industry unfortunately. So I have to work even harder to get noticed. Good thing is my personality gives, I am me. I haven’t needed to change who I am as a person or change my look because like I said all of me gives what it’s supposed to give.
(smile)
Being an independent artist means you have to financially support yourself with no backing of a machine from the labels. All marketing, recording, videos, image comes out of my very own pocket which is another reason why I need to work harder than others. If my video and or song flop, that’s just money lost and on to the next.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am many a recording artist, influencer, actress, dancer and model. I’m known for all of these things. I’m most proud of how far I have come. My team consisted of two people for many years my mother and father. My parents have no music / acting background so all of this is new to them as well. What we have done for my career is very much impressive. It shows that we are dedicated and not stopping any time soon.
My family have given up and worked so hard to help reach my goals.
What sets me apart from others is, I was born this way, I didn’t create this image, I’m not learning to be “this person” I’m actually being myself. It’s not on me, it’s in me.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I found that social media has helped for me. Taking risks and being yourself in YOUR true form.
