Rising Stars: Meet Honda Shahin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Honda Shahin.

Honda Shahin

Hi Honda, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey to founding Shahin Studios was a natural evolution as an artist and printmaker. Collaborating closely with my brother Marwan Shahin on significant projects like the 2Vth Mural during the Egyptian Revolution in Alexandria, Egypt, and the iconic “Smoking Kills” installation served as foundational experiences in our artistic journey.

The decision to establish Shahin Studios was born from a profound love for art, a dedication to craftsmanship, and a deep respect for traditional techniques. It represented an opportunity to carve out a dedicated space for printmaking, with a specific focus on our expertise in silkscreen printing and our innovative exploration of papyrus as a unique canvas rooted in ancient Egyptian traditions.

By founding Shahin Studios, my goal was to provide a platform for showcasing our artistic vision and to bridge the gap between the past and the present. We aimed to blend traditional methods with contemporary expressions, ensuring that our commitment to craftsmanship and attention to detail shone through in every project we undertook.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Considering the circumstances of our beginnings in Egypt. Art was not a widely embraced pursuit in our surroundings, and securing quality supplies for our silkscreen printing endeavors proved to be a formidable challenge. We often found ourselves crafting screens by hand and shipping our artwork worldwide, overcoming logistical hurdles that tested our resolve.

Even as we ventured to Los Angeles, while the city brimmed with opportunities, the process of establishing ourselves in a new artistic community came with its own set of challenges. Despite these formidable obstacles, our passion for art and craftsmanship was unwavering, and it was this determination that ultimately allowed us to flourish. From those early days of handmade screens to the creation of our own studio in LA, each challenge was a catalyst for growth and a testament to the transformative power of art.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Shahin Studios is a creative studio that we founded in 2017. We specialize in creative direction, silkscreen printing, and a diverse range of artistic endeavors that span the realms of fine art, merchandise design, art installations, wallpapers, and large-scale murals. What truly sets us apart is our commitment to pushing the boundaries of creativity, creating experiences that not only visually captivate but also engage on a deeper level.

Our ability to blend traditional methods with cutting-edge techniques is a hallmark of Shahin Studios. We take immense pride in our craftsmanship, our dedication to pushing the boundaries of art, and our mission to create art that is not only visually stunning but also thought-provoking and conversation-sparking. In doing so, we strive to leave a lasting and unique imprint in the world of art.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In the next 5-10 years, we anticipate significant shifts in the art and creative industry. At Shahin Studios, we are committed to not only embracing these changes but also leading the way in shaping the industry’s future. We firmly believe that while AI may automate many aspects of creative work, it can never replicate the essence of human artistry and craftsmanship. We dedicate ourselves to creating art that AI simply cannot mimic, infusing each piece with our unique touch, meticulous attention to detail, and a profound understanding of traditional techniques.

Our dedication to innovation is exemplified by our groundbreaking work in glow-in-the-dark printing and holographic ink. We’ve spent over a year perfecting these techniques. Our glow-in-the-dark prints bring art to life in the dark, adding a surreal dimension, while our holographic ink transforms art when reflecting light, offering an immersive experience. As we look forward, our dream is to establish Shahin Studios as the world’s most renowned creative studio, serving artists worldwide. We are already taking commissions for a wide range of projects, from murals and art installations to wallpaper and silkscreen services. Our goal is to create a more inclusive, diverse, and innovative industry where craftsmanship and artistic vision continue to flourish.
