Rising Stars: Meet Elaine H of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elaine H

Hi Elaine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved ACGN pop culture since I’m a young girl. I started cosplay in 2019 but at that time it’s more of for fun between friends. Gradually I made many friends through cosplay and we often inspire each other, that’s when I decided to deliver better cosplay contents to my fans. Still at that time I didn’t think one day I would go semi-professional. I basically paused cosplay during the pandemic, but after that I started again and surprisingly, I got some invitations to be official guest cosplayers from various big game studios and major cosplay brands. To be honest I was nervous when I became guest cosplayer for the first time, but when I found out that I can communicate freely with audiences and pose smoothly in front of camera, I know I enjoy it and want to continue doing it.
My most recent experience was to travel along the west coast for several guest cosplay events, I received so many warm words from people, they appreciate us coming to their location and thank us for bringing them happiness. This is very meaningful to me, I always believe the ultimate goal for cosplay is to bring happiness to people, I’m glad I did it and will continue to do so!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think the biggest challenge most influencers have is the anxiety about the traffic. It’s disappointing that when you spent so much time, money and energy on a project and not many traffic was brought to your content, then you started to wonder why and even doubt yourself. There’s really nothing much we can do about it, just stay calm, keep making good contents and you’ll eventually get a good traffic.
Another challenge is about losing self-confidence on appearance, as an influencer, you’ll always see others who are better-looking, it’s hard not to compare because it’s human nature. But instead of getting self-doubt, you should see these people as role models, try to seek advice and learn from them. Most of them are very nice and easy to talk to. You can build your self-confidence by make-up, exercise or simply find a character type that fits you well.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have a full-time job in a major financial institution and basically it has nothing to do with cosplay. Being guest cosplayer is only my part-time job, or personal hobby. Many people wonder how I can balance between them and the secret is that I don’t sleep (joking). But of course during my free time, instead of watching TV or hang out with friends, I spend more time on styling cosplay wig, making cosplay props and producing social media content. Behind every beautiful cosplay photos there’s a lot of time and effort being spent.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
1. Take as many pictures as you can so that you have content to post during Covid (because we can’t really go out).
2. Keep doing exercises at home to keep your body active.
3. Stock some face masks at home.
