Today we’d like to introduce you to Chimechi Oparanozie
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey to acting has been anything but ordinary. I move with what’s called a “Miracle Mentality” ..I was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and spent most of my early years as a multi-sport athlete. In middle school and high school, I played football, wrestled, practiced judo, & ran track before continuing on to play football and run track at Santa Monica College, where I was named Student-Athlete of the Year in my final season. But even while I was excelling in sports, I always had this deep-rooted passion for acting. I grew up watching Law & Order: SVU and shows like it, imagining myself on screen one day.
Getting to where I am today wasn’t easy. I faced a lot of challenges—moving between states, couch-surfing, and even dealing with periods of homelessness before finally settling in Los Angeles. But through it all, I never lost sight of what I wanted.
Things started to shift for me when I landed a principal role in Unstoppable, an Amazon MGM feature starring Jennifer Lopez, Jharrel Jerome, Don Cheadle, and Michael Peña, produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. I played Brian Corwin, and it was actually my first-ever audition. That experience showed me that I belonged in this industry, and now, I’m just focused on building from here.
My story is really about persistence—sticking with what I love despite the obstacles. I truly believe that if you’re willing to keep going, even when things get tough, you’ll end up exactly where you’re meant to be.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wouldn’t call it a smooth road, but I believe every experience has played a role in shaping where I’m headed. I’ve lost close friends and family members to gun violence, faced homelessness, and couch-surfed my way through different states before finally landing in LA. One of the most defining moments of my life was being held at gunpoint—only to be saved by my mother’s name. The person holding the gun recognized me from Bring Your Child to Work Day; my mother was a well-known teacher in Pittsburgh, known for her “lovely but play-no-games” mentality. That moment was a reminder of how much she impacted & still impacts people’s lives, and in a way, she saved mine too.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an actor, known for my role in “Unstoppable” I’m so proud of this role because it was huge. Something that I dreamt of doing since a kid came about because I was doing a background extra tryout for this movie and a director noticed me. – What sets me apart is my faith in God & willingness to work hard. Being from Pittsburgh, the blue collar mentality is applied to anything that I do in life.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I would say. KEEP ON BELIEVING. Nothing good in life comes easy. You must have an insurmountable amount of faith, faith that goes beyond human understanding to achieve anything great.
