Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos Cameron.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I moved to LA to get my BFA in Performing Arts at AMDA, and post graduation I’ve been steadily working in the LA theatre scene. I also do film and write music, and my taste usually leans toward the macabre, the weird, and the niche. I did a short film called “The First” that really solidified my yearning to focus on horror, and gave me the hunger to do something like that again. I frequently collaborate with a group of friends in theatre who have created their own original shows, and I figured I would try my hand at putting my stories into theatre too. Last year I wrote and directed a short show called “Play Things” that was a horror play focused on transphobia within the queer community. Now I’m hard at work on my next show that will go up in June of this year under the umbrella of my one man production company, Cursed Productions.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a small artist, it’s always a struggle. When you’re just starting out, you don’t just get handed opportunities, you have to create your own. So that’s what I do! My biggest struggle is motivation and accountability. I wrestle with some deep dark thoughts sometimes, so any day I get up and live I take as a win.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Even just in school, I think I set myself apart from everyone else who was doing theatre by being myself. When everyone was doing ballads I did rock songs, when wanted to be leading men I wanted to be a character actor. Everyone now really knows me as the kind of alternative, horror loving guy. I’ve also never been shy about embracing my sexuality, and that really goes hand in hand with horror. There are so many creatives like me that I’ve found, and I’ve started to stitch together a really cool community of artists that inspire and challenge me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t know that I really believe in luck most times, but there are things I’ve done where I think about how different my life would be if I hadn’t auditioned for that certain show, or gone to that audition. If I hadn’t moved to Burbank and auditioned for a local show, I wouldn’t have my core friend group that I have now. If I hadn’t looked at my email and seen that I had an audition in an hour in Hollywood, I would have missed out on being in my biggest short film project so far.
