Rising Stars: Meet Brynn Taylor of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brynn Taylor.

Hi Brynn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I saw two chrome-colored turntables, and it was love at first sight. I taught myself how to dj way back in the late 1900s. I was in my first year of college, and as far as dj equipment was concerned, I bought whatever I could afford at the time. With the help of some of my Italian grandmother’s records, paired with inspiration I pulled from the inception of MTV’s “TRL” (if you know, you know), I started making mashups. I didn’t know that’s what I was doing because at the time, the term “mashup” was still developing. All I knew was that I was now able to tell musical stories in a brand new way – and it was magical! Now, I feel so fortunate that I get to tell these musical stories for a living, and I have had the opportunity to meet so many amazing people along the way!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I first started, I was told that dj’ing was “more for the boys.” However, I have been very fortunate and grateful to have carved out a niche as a female dj. It hasn’t always been easy, but I have consistently positioned myself to play in a myriad of musical environments which helped me to grow as a business, and as an artist. Misogyny and being sexualized are two main challenges I have faced over the years. I would also like to be streaming more online, but I struggle with getting started because I have been Dj’ing for live audiences for so long – it feels foreign to me to play for a virtual audience.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My favorite thing about djing is taking things that sound familiar, and presenting them in new and exciting ways! I specialize in mashups, live remix, and helping to curating a specific mood or vibe. I love love LOVE a theme! For me, Dj’ing isn’t about playing music – it’s about managing energy. My job is to take every individual in the audience and raise their vibration and shift the collective consciousness.

I continue to create and follow a path that definitely sets me apart from other djs. I have appeared as a DJ in commercials – most recently for the CA Lottery (yes, I am the one scratching the Scratchers!). I recently returned from a 30-city tour with Nitro Circus where I had the opportunity to both DJ and MC in arenas all over the country (all while FMX and BMX bikes were flying overhead). I have opened for incredible celebrity artists at both small private parties, as well as onstage at some of the greatest venues. I have headlined national Pride festivals with audiences in the hundreds of thousands, and I am always proud to say that I was voted Best West Hollywood DJ by wehoconfidential.com. from having held several high-profile nightlife residencies over the years. I entered my first all-female DJ competition and I am happy to report that I won 1st place in the Supergirl Pro Sound Sessions in Oceanside. Did I mention that I also trained at The Second City LA for improv acting?
