Rising Stars: Meet Avraham Edery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Avraham Edery.

Hi Avraham, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born in Brooklyn NY, as a child, there were always two things I wanted to do with my life; make movies and work with horses.

At the time, I didn’t know what either of those things entailed, but my heart was set and the vision was clear.

Growing up in the Hasidic community in a single-parent household was not easy for me, but telling stories and being creative helped me cope. In those moments, I could create a world where everything was okay.

The process of making films brings me a sense of presence and purpose I have not found in any other work. As a filmmaker, I’ve been privileged to be able to listen to other people’s stories and learn about new cultures and world-views.

Since moving to La, I have been working on commercials and growing as a DP and director. My goal is to continue honing my skills and visual aesthetic, using storytelling to create more empathy and connection in the world.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Perfectionism and overthinking has probably been the biggest challenge for me. When I first started out, I would do everything myself. This led to creative burnout and a non-sustainable lifestyle. I learnt that filmmaking is a team sport and having a team of the right people with good communication can make the experience so much more fun and fulfilling.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My main work now is commercials and storytelling films for businesses and artists. I strive for the visual style of my work to bring out the range of human emotions and have an effect of the viewer.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see storytelling being the new medium as apposed to the salesy style commercials. Telling a real human story and connecting with the viewer on a emotional level.
