Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Isshac.
Hi Austin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story starts with my parents. I was fortunate enough to be born into a family of artists with different cultural backgrounds. My dad is from Syria, and my Mom grew up in Orange County, CA, but has roots in Mexico and Cuba. My father’s passion is photography and my mothers is make-up. Through them, I have always been supported and encouraged to follow my creative passions.
I got my first drum set when I was a freshman in high school and tried to learn every song stored on my iPod. Throughout my teens, I attempted to put a band together multiple times but was never successful. After graduating high school, I was undecided in what I wanted to pursue in my career, but I knew it would definitely be related to art. I did a semester of community college but decided to drop out and take my chances pursuing music as a full-time gig. After seeing where I would be studying and learning, the decision was easy and my family was behind me 100%. I enrolled into Musicians Institute in the Fall of 2014 to study drums and percussion as well as audio engineering.
At MI, I saw what it takes to be a true professional in your craft. I began playing with other musicians for the first time, which was a game changer for me. I learned the ins and outs about drumming and sound engineering and soaked up every ounce of knowledge that I possibly could. I pushed myself further than I ever thought possible and realized how much potential I truly had musically. During my time there, I was also required to take classes in music business and marketing, which helped pave the way for the production company I eventually established in 2017, Jung Records.
Once I graduated, I knew I was ready for the big leagues. I am now five years into working as a freelance musician and sound engineer and I have been blessed enough to have worked with some of my favorite musicians of all time. Green Day, Def Leppard and KISS to name a few. I recently released my debut album ‘To Each Their Own’, which I recorded in Washington State on a remote island off the coast of Seattle. My time recording the album is one of my biggest accomplishments as an artist thus far. I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Pursuing art is not for everybody… For me personally, there have been some bumps along the way. Starting my own business while building clientele has not always been the easiest. However, through years of dedication and maintaining a positive attitude, I have begun building a name for myself and my company.
As a child, I didn’t always feel like I fit in. I have a unique look and was teased a lot. Since my childhood, I’ve really learned to love and embrace my true self which I believe comes across in my music.
I hope anyone struggling with fitting in can learn to embrace what sets them apart. My advice is to never stop being your true authentic self.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am primarily known for being a drummer and sound engineer in Los Angeles; I have a vast experience in running sound for music venues, recording studios and events, as well as playing and recording with other musicians. For the last five years, my focus has been primarily to nurture and grow my company Jung Records. I strive to establish genuine connections with local artists and help create a space where musicians can thrive.
One of the main reasons I started Jung Records was to help up-and-coming artists like myself fulfill production needs without taking away artistic freedoms. Being known for my diverse skill set has allowed me to work with a wide range of artists and companies. Whether it’s working with rock legends at the Whisky A Go Go or producing local artists at my studio, I am always grateful for the opportunities that come my way.
What I think really sets me apart from others in the industry is my positivity, care, and compassion for the artists and their vision. There have been many instances where people have noticed my thoughtfulness and passion for my craft while working with them. And at the end of the day, I think it all comes down to establishing great connections with others and pushing yourself to your greatest potential.
How do you think about luck?
I believe you make your own luck! With every thought, word, and action we put out into the Universe, it accumulates into either positive or negative outcomes. It’s very easy to compare ourselves to others and say “oh they got lucky” and “wish I had their luck”. But it ultimately falls onto us and how we decide to attract things into our lives.
