Today we’d like to introduce you to Antwon Torres.
Hi Antwon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a child my love for music was very obvious. It gave me a euphoric feeling and I did not know why. I never had the urge to be a musician as a child because I was in love with sports too much. After graduating high school I knew I was not going to play sports in college because I did not like academics much. Thats when I turned all my attention to music
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not, Growing up in a Mexican/American household my family did not want me to pursue music at the age I chose to do it. They wanted me to make as much money as I could right away. Whether it was under the sun or in an office. Being a musician does not pay well at all when you start and they did not want me to go through that but as soon as I started writing more songs and played more open mics they become more supportive. Guitar is a hard instrument to learn, sometimes I felt I was starting way too late in life compared to my other favorite artist. After years of practice and studying, the road has smoothed out now and I feel better about being a songwriter.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What makes me so proud of my work is that it’s I’m the only one in my entire family who is a musician and It feels very good to go off the beaten path to create my own. I would say what sets me apart from others is I come from a songwriting perspective that starts with a guitar or piano as opposed to electronic music or hiphop which is usually starts on a laptop and seems the be the more popular genre to create these days but I have no problem with creating music the masses don’t tend to listen to first.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Probably to never give up and always do what you love even if it’s not giving you great wealth at the moment. I have thought about giving up a lot of times as a young adult but I never did and kept working, Anytime I write a good song or play a good show Im proud of that and realize If I have given up in the past then I would have never made it to this point of my music life.
