Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Wolf-Weiss.
Hi Abby, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I moved to Los Angeles from New York originally to work in the film business which I did for many years working for production companies at Warner Brothers, Universal and Disney. My last job was running George Clooney’s TV company which was truly a dream job but during that time i had been through a challenging health crisis. At the same time I happened to be doing a big renovation on my home which turned out to be such a blessing because instead of googling recurrence rates for breast cancer i was spending all night searching for beautiful pendant lights and tile. It saved my sanity and after that experience I realized that i needed to express creativity in a different way and be surrounded by beautiful things. That was 14 years ago. I knew a few incredibly talented designers and asked if I could intern and almost to a person they all said to “just start doing it” So I asked a few friends if I could do a room or two for free and very quickly i began to get referrals and grew my business from there. Because my aesthetic was always combining old with new I had collected so many unique pieces over the years and decided also to open a small retail store to sell and use as a lab to try out custom work. Today I have Abby Wolf-Weiss Interiors which i run on my own and a retail store called Maquette which I share with another designer named Julie Goldman.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My challenges were not that unique. Like a lot of designers starting out I struggled with how to scale my firm without hiring a huge staff. I was so lucky to have constant work but i realized that without infrastructure it’s impossible to grow. At the same time I really love having a small business where I can do both design and retail with relatively few employees.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I would like to think I am known for someone who understands how to help clients articulate their own aesthetic and in turn create homes that are uniquely delightful to the people living there. For me, a well designed home is always one that creates an immediate sense of well being and beauty. i never want houses that I do to look “designed”. I will always use well crafted over mass produced and because of that I end up using a lot of custom pieces along with well made vintage that has already stood the test of time and look even more beautiful because of it. I think every room should have at least one or two pieces that are truly one-of-a-kind. I encourage my clients to invest in original art at whatever level they can afford and while i don’t go crazy with bright colors I don’t do beige on beige on beige 🙂
What are your plans for the future?
My future plans are to continue to grow both Abby Wolf-Weiss Interiors and Maquette (which I share with Julie Goldman) Maquette really showcases our love of both vintage and artisian made pieces for the home that you won’t see anywhere else. The two parts of the business work symbiotically and I am excited to build on that. My dream is to continue have the space to create in both retail and design.
