We’re looking forward to introducing you to Megan Greenspan. Check out our conversation below.
Megan, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
This is a tough question because I truly believe I am doing both. I am following my path but letting myself explore the other roads. I truly believe this is essential for creatives because we have no idea who or what lies ahead. I have fallen so far off of my path, to then be put back on my route miles ahead. That is because I am not afraid of exploring the unknown. Letting yourself wander is scary, but growth comes from stepping outside of your comfort zone.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an actress and model born and raised in Los Angeles. I was fortunate enough to grow up in Los Angeles which made it very easy for me to get involved in the arts. I grew up a dancer and an actress and was always supported by my parents. I knew from a young age my heart was with acting. Through acting I fell in love with modeling and content creation. It was never an easy path because aesthetically, I never resembled an actress or a model. I was curvy, and when I first started this career, curvy women were not represented. That is when I decided I needed to open doors for myself and make this career happen. I put myself in uncomfortable situations where rejection was a given, just so I could get my name out there.
Now, years later, all body types are accepted and represented. And here I am, still working and doing what I truly love.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child I believed I had limits, that I couldn’t do it all. I thought that some things were unattainable either because of my appearance, talent, or just because I did not have insane Hollywood connections. I know as a child you are taught that you have no limits, but unfortunately growing up in this industry you learn otherwise.
Now I believe that when you truly want something, you’ll make it happen. There is nothing holding you back and nothing getting in your way. I have opened doors for myself and paved my own path because I will stop at nothing to make my dreams come true.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of failure. I was always afraid to start something new and end up failing, To me, it felt like a waste of my time. Why start a new career path when I could easily fail? I always felt more comfortable spending time on the certain rather than the uncertain. Looking back I realize it held me back more than I thought. It prevented me from jumping into different projects and different connections.
I also have the fear of not being perfect. This is a fear that still holds me back in life. I am so worried about messing up and people perceiving me as not being perfect. I keep reminding myself that “messy art is still art” and the idea of perfection is a made up social construct.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
That’s a tough question. I believe iI have different versions of myself, but for the right reasons. For example, on social media it is hard to not want to always be perfect. Every Instagram picture I post, every TikTok I make, I try to present my best self. That doesn’t mean aesthetically necessarily, but a “perfect” post. Everything is edited well, my house is cleaned, etc. In real life around professionals, I am very put together. Represent myself well. When I’m with my friends or alone even, I have the ability to let loose.
It’s hard to admit but I truly don’t know who the “real me” is anymore. I have so many sides of myself, all which feel authentic, but are any of them the real me?
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
Absolutely. I wanted to hit a certain follower goal on social media. I truly thought that would make me happy and feel successful. Once I hit that goal, literally nothing changed. It was just another day and I moved on.
It made me realize that in this career, goals are ever changing.
