Meet Zoe Lin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zoe Lin.

Hi Zoe, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in Taipei and spent my early years growing up in Singapore, Taipei, and Seattle. These experiences have formed the foundation of who I am as a person and as a designer. In 2014, I moved to LA to attend Otis College of Art and Design, knowing that there is a vibrant art and entertainment scene in the city. While majoring in motion graphics at art school, I started working as a designer and animator in the industry, mainly on tv/film title sequences and commercial projects. Since then, I have worked at studios in LA and NY initially as a motion graphics designer and now transitioned more specifically to branding design.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say that I have learned and was lucky to have benefited a lot from the connections formed with my peers, coworkers, teachers, and mentors since my college days. You never know how one opportunity will lead to another, so cherish these relationships! The main learning curve in my experience was from my career pivot from a motion graphics designer to a brand designer. There are many overlaps between the two in skill sets and work processes. At the same time, there are specific skills that I needed to develop, for example logo design, typography, and art direction.

There will always be something new to learn though, especially in a field like design where the work must reflect the times.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am currently working as a brand designer and sometimes cameo as an animator at a design studio called Gretel. As a brand designer, our job is to create a visual identity toolkit that establishes the look and feel of the brand. It requires the ability to create expressive yet conceptual designs that best represent the brand and to systematize those behaviors into guidelines for the client’s in-house team. I hope to continue developing in these fields. My proudest moments were when my design direction was chosen by the client and further developed with the team into the end result you’d see out in the real world. I am proud to have worked on rebrand projects for clients like MasterClass, POPL, and Snapchat.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Our family used to live in an area by the foot of a mountain in Taipei known for having hot springs. Every winter, we would go to the bath houses for a dip and afterwards to our neighborhood hotpot diner to finish off a warm and cozy night. I remember feeling like those were tiny relaxing stay-cations.
