Meet Yaya Kieu of Beyond the Canvas by Yaya in San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yaya Kieu.

Yaya, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been a painter, grew up with artist and art was my freedom! While I lived in Okinawa, Japan I had a DOD job that brought me zero joy. One day I decided to chase my dreams and take a chance! I quit my 9-5 and started selling my paintings. I feel like I was one of the lucky ones or this has always been my calling so things TOOK OFF!

I didn’t have a hard time becoming a full-time artist which I’m so thankful for. A couple of years went by and I moved from Okinawa, Japan to San Diego. Something about tropical, sunny and full of life city’s bring me so much inspiration. Here I am today still painting and manifesting love and light through my art!

Has it been a smooth road?
This is a tough one. I believe our minds are the true key to how things will go. If I believe things will be tough then they will be tough. If I believe it’s going to be EASY and smooth then that’s exactly what it will be. So, it’s easy. It’s very rewarding and in every situation there is light!

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
What sets me apart from others? ME! I am me, the only me and I create from the heart. No one is like me. I’m an acrylic painter who paints on everything! I’m constantly trying to find new things to paint on. I’m whimsical, colorful, unique and all of my work is one of a kind! I love creating unique wearable art, well recently that’s been my thing! I’m truly proud of the new things I’ve been trying it’s always scary trying new things out but it’s going well so far!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think it’s only going to go up from here. People are starting to see how important artist are, how shopping small is important and how buying with purpose is important. I think buying with a purpose will be a trend!
