Today we’d like to introduce you to Verlon Roberts.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in a small town in Georgia where I would create my own action films in my yard. I would recruit friends and neighbors (sometimes they didn’t even know they were in it) and live out my action movie fantasy everyday. I was always the hero saving the world from some threatening evil. I always told myself when I grew up, I wanted to be in action movies and do stand up comedy. I was raised by a terminally ill single mother so I had to grow up quickly and be very strong and self-sufficient. I am very thankful for everything my childhood instilled into me as it has helped me get through many difficult times. After school, I joined the United States Marine Corps. I wanted to serve for many reasons but the feeling of belonging to a greater purpose was the golden nugget I found. I got to travel the world and learned so much about people in my adventures.
I gained invaluable discipline and work ethic that helps me today in working towards my dreams. I ended up staying in the Marine Corps and making a career of it. I have so many experiences that help me today in preparing for roles. Today I am now retired from the Marine Corps and a father of four kids ranging from 22 years old down to three years old twins….lol. I love being a father and a husband. Having twins is an experience all in its own and often joke it is harder than anything I experienced in the Marines. My wife and I were living in Seattle after I retired and everyday, we would discuss our dreams and talk about making changes. We finally put our plan into action I went to school and got my BFA in acting and we scheduled our move to the South Bay Area.
My wife was born and raised here and when we met, I was stationed in California and always loved her neighborhood and imagined raising our family here. We pulled the trigger in February of this year and sold our home and moved to Torrance and are living in the same house my wife grew up in. It is special to know our twins are in the same home she grew up in and stay in her old bedroom. We love our little South Bay neighborhood and everyone in it. Especially during the Pandemic and being new to the neighborhood, I quickly saw this was a special spot. My wife Stefanie has started her own Health and Wellness Business helping working mothers and families find their healthy lifestyle. I am going to school full time at Lee Strasberg Institute and auditioning as the industry slowly starts to re-open. I love the challenge of acting and navigating the industry. I have always loved having a mountain to climb in front of me and this mountain is one of the most challenging yet.
When we are not working on our passions and dreams, we love to explore the outdoors with our family. We recently purchased a camper van that we use for our adventures. We also rent it out on Outdoorsy.com to give others the chance to experience our beautiful world and connect to nature. My wife and I like to help people and one of our biggest passions is helping others find their health. We have both trained private clients over the years, and I mainly focus on teens and showing them how to build a fitness routine and coach them in self-confidence. Self-confidence was not something that I possessed as a child and really didn’t start to feel confident until my 30s and always thought if I could have had this when I was younger. So yeah, I want our youth to find their confidence and know they can achieve whatever it is they strive to do.
Has it been a smooth road?
Some of the struggles along the way first and foremost losing both of my parents at a young age and having to be self-sufficient very early on. We did not have a lot of money growing up and always had to be very resourceful in how we survived. When I was in recruit training, I got inured the second week of training and thought about quitting and going home, but I decided to stay focused on my mission and I stayed two extra months to see my goal through to the end. My struggles today is all time and trying to be the best I can for my family and myself. We live a hectic goal-oriented life, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am an actor and I feel what sets me apart is my life experiences and the ability to use that the roles I take on.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the community vibe and the nature that is so easily accessible. I feel like the South Bay has handled the pandemic fairly well and most of our citizens have come together and are closer now more than ever. What I like least is parking tickets. We recently got a ticket in a zone that was not marked but hey live and learn.
