Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Preciado.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kelsey. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I loved to bake and dreamed of running a bakery one day. Cut to college summers working in a bakery and realizing that the 3 am start time and repetition of the same recipes every day that the bakers went through was not exactly what I wanted to do with my life. After graduating in 2011, I thought I would start a food blog to document the meals I was making and bread I was baking while living back at my parent’s house. So, in 2012, I bought a domain and seven years later that little blog transformed into a real food blog that focuses on healthy meals, snacks, desserts, and cocktails. Over those seven years, a lot has changed in my life and now, I am married, with a kid, running my own business and currently writing my first cookbook!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road and nothing has been handed to me! While building this business I was working a normal 8-5 job in HR and had to spend all of my free time working to build the blog. At one point in the journey, my husband, who is now a firefighter, was in paramedic school which meant we had to rely on my income only. At that point, I not only had to ramp up my blog to build the business but mostly to earn some extra income to keep up afloat. I am forever grateful for this time because it pushed me to reach out to more and more brands and ask for the kind of money I really deserved. Although that came with a lot of no’s, it came with a handful of yes’s that kept us out of debt and eventually, let me quit that day job. To young women just starting their journey, I would say to work hard and be okay with missing some parties to crush your goals. That time will pass and you will reap the benefits of that hard work!
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I provide healthy recipes that are mostly paleo based, meaning, grain free, dairy free and refined sugar-free. With a market that is saturated with food bloggers, I try to set myself apart with my personality and really connecting with my community and followers. I love to use Instagram to share my day to day and how I balance a healthy lifestyle while enjoying the finer things (aka WINE!). I am just a 30-year-old gal with the cutest 1-year old that loves a good dance party in my kitchen. Because my daughter has been eating solids for six months, I have also been sharing our journey with Baby Led Weaning, where she has just eaten what we eat from the start. I love to share how I am attempting to build a healthy palette for my daughter while also enjoying watching her demolish a chicken quesadilla.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I think the entrepreneur space is made for women. I have never worked harder than I have for myself when it feels like the world and ton of opportunities are at my fingertips. Women are so creative and have so much drive to be dedicated to whatever they are passionate about. I think if more women followed their passions and put themselves in the CEO shoes (before they have made a cent), we would run the world!
