Meet Trailblazer Erin Marton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Marton.

Erin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been shooting photos intentionally since my freshman year of college, but even before that, I was always drawn to photography in some way! I loved the way photography would cause me to slow down and see the world around me with clarity and focus. When I was a kid, I would borrow my parents’ point and shoot camera and zoom around the neighborhood to take photos of flowers, the cat living next-door, and of course, the sunset over the water. A few photography classes in college elevated my understanding and pushed me to upgrade my camera gear so I could take photos of my travels and my family.

Once I graduated from college, I started photographing friends and couples who knew I had a skill for photography. I completely fell in love with the opportunities I had to photograph couples specifically – their connection and joy made me so excited, and all I wanted to do was shoot more because it was FUN! In 2018, I quit a job that was draining and difficult to pursue my own business full-time. I assisted other wedding photographers and began booking my own wedding clients! I worked extremely hard to educate myself and make sure that I was providing a valuable service to the couples trusting me with such an important day of celebration. I still believe this is the most fun and also the most meaningful job I’ve ever had the chance to do. I work hard every day to give my clients an incredible experience and beautiful images they’ll have for a lifetime!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While the freelance life sounds like a blast, it comes with challenges! It takes effort to stay motivated and organized, and it’s always a process to structure your days in a way that allows for deep work to happen.

As cliche as it sounds, it can be easy to doubt yourself and your contribution to your industry. There are so many incredible wedding photographers here in Los Angeles alone – what do I bring to the table? While it’s frustrating to play the game of comparison, it’s liberating to break the cycle as you understand yourself and the value you can bring to the client relationship.

For me personally, I’m really leaning into my ability to connect with my couples in a meaningful, natural way. At the end of the day, weddings are a unique opportunity to celebrate the history of a relationship so far and solidify it as you step into the future together. Couples want photos that show their chemistry and personality! It’s my job to keep things simple and focused on them for the best results.

In a more general sense, it’s wise to step back and think about the value YOU can bring to the clients you serve. Don’t be afraid to ask the big questions and take time to find answers yourself. It’s so much better to know who you are and how you can serve others rather than copying the trends you see in your industry.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Erin Marton Photography – what should we know?
If you can’t tell already, I’m a wedding photographer! I photograph engagements, weddings, and elopements in Southern California (and sometimes other cool places my couples want to go!). My style is colorful and fun. When I’m working with couples, I focus on holding space for their connection by providing gentle directions and prompts throughout our time together. The end result is photos that look and feel like them, not overly posed or staged in any way.

I’m so proud to offer a luxury experience to my clients from beginning to end. I include tons of helpful informational guides, gifts, quick delivery times for photos, and lots of fun little extras along the way. It’s so cool to get to their wedding day and genuinely feel like we are friends because of all the time we’ve had together to dream and plan for their day!

I think the way I care for my clients sets me apart. I also really care about diverse representation in my portfolio to help as many people as possible see themselves in my images so it’s easy to consider me an option when they need to hire a photographer. I believe everyone deserves great wedding photos, and it’s such an honor when I get chosen to give that to a couple!

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well-positioned for?
There has never been a better time to be a woman in America than right now, and my hope is that there is more and more opportunity every day. As a female small business owner, I feel so encouraged and empowered being surrounded by tons of boss babes (actually tho, they’re all so amazing) who are photographing weddings, achieving significant academic degrees, designing jewelry, and creating non-toxic beauty products. Women work hard to understand each other and provide support to one another, so I think there is really great community to be found as a woman in business today.
