Meet Tommy Andres

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tommy Andres.

Hi Tommy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Born in Los Angeles in 1989. Originally from the Pico-Union area but raised in South Central all my life. I am the oldest of five children, raised by a single mother. Lost my father to the streets at 1 year of age. And growing up, to help my mom save some money, I would take on the responsibility to cut my sibling’s hair amongst other things. Started writing lyrics as a hobby at the age of 12 in order to express my feelings. Hanging out with the wrong crowd, I experimented with drugs and even went to jail a few times. Met my fiancé in 2010. And became a father to a wonderful human being with autism in 2014, where I was inspired to go to barber school to learn the trade to cut my son’s hair at a professional level. Taking my life more seriously after the fact, I started doing music in 2016, where I decided to brand myself. I have worked with big names in the music industry such as: Mr. Capone-E, EMC Sinatra, YBe to name a few. Then, fast foward, covid-19 hit. And with a lot of time to think, I decided to dedicate myself to push Dreamers LA and now attend and host pop us to promote. You can say I am a jack of all trades!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wish I can say it was a smooth road but unfortunately, it was not. I lost my father at the tender age of only 1 due to gang violence. Being raised by a single mother with four other siblings was economically bad, getting the bare minimum.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a dedicated father and husband. I participate in pop-ups, cut hair and currently looking for employment as another source of income. What I am most proud of is developing the will to keep going despite of hardships. When I have people telling me how much I motivate them, it gives me the sense to keep going. I get inspired and feed off that energy. What sets me apart from others is my work ethic. I let my work speak for myself.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
In the words of the greatest of all time, “Just cus we are in the ghetto doesn’t mean we can’t grow”. I stand on that. Question everything. Don’t give up cus the hustle don’t stop. Closed mouths don’t get fed. Find your purpose in life. We all go through obstacles but is how we overcome them that defines us!
