Meet Tiffany Daniel Jones of Styled By TDJ in Lakewood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Daniel Jones.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started out as most stylist, doing hair for family and friends through school. One day it clicked that this was my passion. I worked for a corporate salon for about five years, moving my way through management, and in that time realized I could run my own business. Being a mother of three by age 19, I was determined to bring my kids up without be a statistic.

My husband and I worked hard together to help me get to where I am today. In my time in corporate salons, I learned a love for more than just extensions, but also a love for styling, updos, and the elegant. I feel like hair is a very important accessory. Good hair can make you feel confident and empowered. Styled by TDJ is a brand I built with families in mind. I keep my prices reasonable because I don’t want to be an experience for now but your life long stylist. I love the smiles on my client’s faces as they walk out in confidence, knowing their hair was in good hands.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I found it difficult to transition from corporate to ownership at first. I went to a local family salon for a year to rebuild locally and found it hard to take orders or not being in charge. I love that when I left that salon, my former boss and I felt as equals and not boss to employee. I had to learn to be coach able again. Remember that a stylist is always a student because things change and trends happen.

Styled By TDJ – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Styled by TDJ specializes in braids, blowouts and special occasion styling. I believe I am set apart by the extra care I take with my clients, making sure their hair is cared for properly before every style. Most Braiders charge extra to wash their client’s hair. I don’t because I want to make sure the hair is properly conditioned and taken care of prior to styling. What better way than to do it myself. And the client gets a great massage! I’m proud to be on the healthy side of hair. I will not do a style that your hair can not handle. Not all money is good money.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Opening my salon suite! The day I opened I was nervous and happy and scared. But seeing my name on the door, on the sign, on the flyers, really gave me a “we did it” feeling.
