Meet Theo Hoarau of NASAYA in North Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theo Hoarau.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in Reunion Island, a French island off the coast of Madagascar. I started music and playing guitar around the age of 12, and I knew very quick after that music was what I wanted to do for a living.

Around the age of 15 – 16, I started posting some guitar videos/compositions online and randomly sent those to a teacher at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. I ended up going there for a 5-week summer program and then got a scholarship for the full 4-year program.

During my studies, I started writing and releasing music for my artist project ‘NASAYA.’ Shortly after graduating, I moved to LA and started working on my artist project full time, also remixing and producing for other artists.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I come from a pretty isolated place and moving to the US was my first experience living in big cities – that was definitely a significant change of lifestyle and being so far away from home and family all the time isn’t always easy.

Moving to LA was also an interesting experience – It’s a very special city, there’s a lot of opportunities and so many people doing the same thing at a very high level. I often felt overwhelmed, ‘lonely’ and pressured to work all the time which sometimes led me to reconsider music as a career.

I feel that I know how to balance this a little better now and enjoy more the music I’m making when I’m not ‘forcing’ it.

NASAYA – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I write and release music under the name ‘NASAYA.’ I’d describe it as electronica music that mixes influences from Jamie xx, Tame Impala, Flume and Michael Jackson – It kind of blends futuristic sounds and textures with retro, moody atmospheres.

I’ve released my first singles with the label ‘Majestic Casual’ – and I’ve been lucky to get good exposure from streaming websites such as Spotify when starting out the project. I also produce/write for other artist’s projects and have remixed artists such as BROODS or Tim Atlas.

I’m currently planning releases for new tracks I’ve finished that includes collaborations from different artists I’ve worked with since I moved to LA. – the first track should be out early May. I feel my sound has matured a lot and I’m really excited to share those.
