Meet Taylor Hall of The Tried Equestrian in Santa Clarita

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Hall.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was inspired to create a space that offered more affordable price points in the equestrian industry without giving up any of the style. I wanted to help make the sport more accessible because I truly believe if you love horses, you should be able to be around them.

I decided to take on The Tried Equestrian full time after leaving a great position at a company within the movie industry. I had taken a day off of that “day job” to help riders at The Compton Jr. Posse (an organization to “keep kids on horses and off the streets”) get dressed for an upcoming horse show. I instead spent the entire day tied to my phone because even taking one day off was tricky. I decided it was time I go all in on my “side job”, The Tried Equestrian. I gave my two weeks at my other position that Monday. It was a scary leap but in hindsight, I wouldn’t have done it any other way!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I laugh because if I could go back and give myself a step-by-step guide of how to get where we are today, I think I would have been overwhelmed and said there’s no way I’m going to learn how to start a website, SEO, paid marketing strategies, etc. etc. on my own. It honestly may have bummed me out if I knew the road ahead! It’s been A LOT of long nights, starting from scratch, making the wrong moves and figuring out how to salvage something.

I personally have an undergraduate degree in Animal Sciences and after college worked several different jobs at an insurance company, a recruiter and then account manager at a company within the movie industry so e-commerce, marketing and “business” weren’t really something I was super versed in. I’ve found I am more inclined to marketing and am currently working on building what I’m best at and finding people who excel in the areas I don’t.

Please tell us about The Tried Equestrian.
We are a consignment and discount shop that sells equestrian tack and apparel (think the outfits you see in the Olympics – riders in black helmets, tailored jackets and tall black riding boots). We work with individual consignors selling their closets but also with tack stores and brands who may be looking to move old inventory or who would even like to use our brand as a discovery platform to entice new customers to make a purchase at a discounted price.

We offer our consignment services all over the United States (we send consignors a consignment kit that includes a large shipping bag and a prepaid return shipping label – think like theRealReal of the horse world). We make the process as easy as possible by offering a white glove service from pricing and researching items, photographing and shipping out the items once it sells.

We’ve found that consignment is something that must be extremely transparent and organized. We recognize our consignors are the blood of our company and must be treated as such if we’d like to keep the best possible flow of inventory coming in. I think this approach has really separated us from other consignment shops.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I am a horse girl through and through. My best memories are spending all day out at the barn with friends. It was like day camp for me growing up.
