Meet Steve Walker of Steve Walker Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Walker.

Hi Steve, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a therapist in Hermosa Beach serving teens, adults, and couples. (Registered Associate Clinical Counselor, APCC #14084). My passion to become a therapist started while serving in the Marine Crops in the early 2000’s. As my friends and fellow Marines returned from deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan they retired experiencing anxiety, depression, and PTSD. That was when I learned the power of listening and supporting people through their obstacles and traumas. That was when the seeds were planted for me to become a therapist and dedicate my strengths and abilities towards helping others navigate life’s challenges through psychoanalysis and unconditional support in the therapeutic environment I provide.

I learned about my passion to support teens while serving as counselor at a South Bay middle school and high school. This generation of teens face difficult challenges like social media, school safety, and relationships; I find it especially meaningful being able to help them through this time in their life.

I am especially trained to support my clients overcome traumas with the use of EMDR therapy. (Eye movement desensitization & reprocessing). EMDR has given me the ability to treat phobias, chronic nightmares, sudden death of loved ones, childhood traumas, and violence. My experience in treating trauma was honed while support first responders and military veterans in a South Bay treatment center.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Life threw me a curve ball when I was diagnosed with an eye disease that progressively took my vision. I had to learn to overcome the challenge of being blind and the emotional toll that came with the vision loss. Family and friends were a huge part of my ability to not allow blindness slow me down. As a blind person I have been able to complete multiple triathlons including two Ironman Triathlons, finish marathons, train in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and purse my doctorate in marriage and family therapy (DMFT).
