Meet Stephen Logan of Merlone Geier Partners

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Logan.

Stephen, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After graduating from the University of Arizona in 1997 I started as a Building Manager with Spieker Properties in Orange, CA. After several months learning the property management side of the office business I assisted with multiple construction and re-positioning projects in Orange County. I eventually moved to Manhattan Beach and oversaw the expansion of our West LA office in Santa Monica.

Eventually Spieker was bought out by Equity Office Properties where I managed and oversaw all of the construction activities for LA County and approximately 9 million square feet. In 2006, I left Equity Office to pursue a development role at Macerich where I oversaw the re-development of Santa Monica Place, Broadway Plaza Fashion Outlets of San Francisco and other expansions throughout the western portfolio.

In 2016, I left Macerich to pursue development opportunities with Merlone Geier Partners and moved my family to San Diego, California. Currently as VP, Development I oversee heavy lifting re-development projects. I reside in Carlsbad, CA with my wife Heidi and two kids, Cooper 5 and Chloe 2 1/2.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing in development is smooth to say the least. Struggles early in my career include trying to act like I knew more than I did at the time. Experience in this business means everything and at times I tried to get ahead of myself by thinking I knew more than I really did.

The downturn in 2008 was a very difficult time in dealing with very stressed personalities in a time of turmoil and the unknown. This was a very humbling time especially watching your colleagues getting laid off and a struggle to find work for years to come.

Merlone Geier Partners invests in and operates retail and retail-driven mixed-use properties on the West Coast. Since our founding in 1993 we have been one of the most active and successful retail real estate investors in our markets.

Vertically integrated and regionally focused, our business model has allowed us to build the market knowledge and expertise to deliver high quality projects within the communities we serve.

I oversee the re-development of our heavy lifting projects with oversight of entitlements, anchor negotiations, site plan development, city negotiations and financial responsibility for the projects.

Our company prides itself and doing what we say when we say it. We pride ourselves on our integrity when dealing with our city’s, peers, brokers and tenants.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
LA is always a great place to start. The diversity of cities and people make the city one of the most unique in this country. LA offers challenges and opportunities on every level within each businesses objective.
