Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Bell.
Hi Stephanie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a filmmaker and photographer based in Los Angeles, California. I have dedicated my career to capturing moments and telling stories that showcase the joys and diversity within Black culture through commercial and narrative works. With over 10 years of education in media, marketing, journalism, and filmmaking, my path has not been straight, but all of my skills intertwine to support my art as a form of activism. I’ve lived several creative lives as a director, producer, writer, and photographer. I’ve directed three short films, Defending Our Crowns, dancing with Maleeah, and Reclaiming the Sea, and I’ve worked on several other short films as either cinematographer, producer, or production designer.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My road has had its twists and turns. I stumbled into filmmaking while in community college and quickly realized that I wanted to transfer into a film school, but I kept getting rejected due to lack of experience. I was made to feel like an outcast in my media classes as I was often the only Black woman in the room. I ended up studying Journalism, which I had no interest in at the time, but it ended up being the best path for me to take in order to get to where I am today.
We’ve been impressed with Sal & Lux, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the diversity of Los Angeles! There’s something for everybody here, and each community has its own unique touch. I wish it was easier to navigate through traffic though!
