Meet Starr Perry

Hi Starr, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello my name is Starr*, I’m from Los Angeles, CA, proudly born and raised!!! This year I am happy to announce that #TheGiftSquad will be celebrating five years!! I have always wanted to start my own business, but I also wanted to be an RN. Once I was settled into my nursing career i felt it was time to start my business. I started the business as a personal shopping company that would also include coordinating & planning events. I’ve always been interested in everything arts & crafts, planning parties and having fun. I was constantly trying out new ideas and products with The Gift Squad. I had some success, but honestly, not much. It wasn’t until I started offering Balloon Decor that The Gift Squad started to really take off. I never gave up and I always had positive expectations for The Gift Squad. Some years I only had a hand full of jobs! I believe I got to where I am today by hardworking hard, not giving up, & most importantly believing in myself and the company! Just within this last year, I’ve had to hire part-time and occasional employees. I even purchased a van due to the growth of the company!

Well it depends on what you consider smooth road! I’ve had some stops along the way and detours but I never gave up and kept believing for a “big break.” One of the hardest parts for me with the business was getting people to trust me enough to hire me. I tried different products. I Had a candle collaboration with a candle company, I started a t-shirt line and a few other things. They would sell, but there were hardly repeat customers, it started to feel like maybe they only bought from me to “support me” It wasn’t until God dropped the gem of balloon decor to the business that I’ve had repeat customers and actually am able to see some profit.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The Gift Squad is a creative, fun company. At this point, I would say we specialize in Balloon Art and decor. I can officially say “we” have done all types of parties and events. Creating events and art are about the only things or work that I have no problem waking up early in morning to do. I believe what sets me apart from others is that you will always get more than you paid for! I will not leave an event or stop working on a project until I am satisfied and it is to my liking!

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Yes absolutely!!!! i would say learn from everyone!  On social media follow all types of companies in the field that you desire to work in! Don’t be afraid to asks questions, yes you may get some doors closed in your face, but don’t give up, always remember your goals and know that it is always ok to change things up and try new ideas!!! You fail when you don’t try!! Carpe Diem!!
