Meet Sonia Fregoso of Obsidian Woman LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonia Fregoso

Hi Sonia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Being a first-gen Xicana, born and raised in Boyle Heights, my parents instilled the importance of receiving a higher education as the highest achievement. Naturally, I became a high-achieving Latina and obtained my Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Southern California. I am grateful my parents pushed me in this direction because it also led me to begin the healing journey of my mind, body, and spirit. Starting this healing journey is where my story truly begins because it is where I learned (or unlearned) who I was taught to be– a high achiever, people pleaser, and perfectionist.

My healing journey has guided me to where I am today– a licensed psychotherapist and a body-centered, intuitive healer. I help people build a sense of safety in their body to feel and express their emotions, needs, and desires. These are a few things high-achievers, people pleasers, and perfectionists have a hard time doing. I learned this from personal experience, my education, and training as a therapist.

I blend modern psychology with ancestral wisdom to help people connect to their body and heal from trauma and grief & loss. Ancestral somatic techniques allow us to heal without re-traumatizing ourselves. Instead, we learn to listen to the body’s innate wisdom, tapping into the healing that lies beneath words.

My healing journey has consisted of talk therapy, somatic therapy, and psychedelic assisted therapy. As I continue my personal healing journey, I have learned to live life at my own pace without judgement or shame about what I have or have not accomplished. Most importantly, I’ve learned that sharing my experiences and my knowledge is part of my greater purpose in life.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve been on this journey for over a decade and it has not been smooth, until now. When I first started the healing work I decided to go at it alone, without a guide. It seemed easy enough– journal, meditate, feel your feelings. But, it got harder and harder the more I learned about society, generational trauma, and systemic trauma. I needed a guide. So I reached out to my current therapist, who has made this journey much more comfortable to bear. She taught me that healing doesn’t necessarily happen in the mind. Healing happens in our body because our body carries somatic memories from past traumas (memories we might not even be aware of).

Your body holds a story, too. This is when I decided to specialize in somatic healing. The most challenging part of somatic healing is getting use to feeling all the physical sensations in your body. It’s difficult because most of us don’t even pay attention to our body. If anything, we do everything to avoid it, numb, it, or ignore it. We also tend to judge and shame our body, which perpetuates the abuse we’re trying to heal.

Healing is so complex! This is why it is so important to find a guide you connect with and trust.

We’ve been impressed with Obsidian Woman LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My journey into healing birthed Obsidian Woman LLC, where I guide others to inner peace. Obsidian Woman LLC is also a business I started to offer my services beyond psychotherapy (I also have a private practice). I combine somatic therapy, psychology, and ancestral wisdom to create unique healing experiences. My mission is to help you live a body-centered life and unlearn everything that is keeping you from expressing your highest self. Most of what keeps us stuck comes from generational, systemic, and ancestral wounds. I’ve walked this path – both as someone seeking healing and as a guide for others. I’ve learned that healing happens when we honor the knowledge that our body holds. Whether you’re feeling lost, seeking peace, or curious about what healing could mean for you, I’m here to guide you. Every step you take towards understanding yourself is sacred work. My Soma & Spirit Coaching Program is an offering that came from the depths of my soul. It’s a somatic (body-centered) coaching program that offers support for mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Unlike talk therapy, it gives space for your body & intuition to lead the journey. My guidance will help you slow down and learn the language of your body so you can listen to what you are truly needing at this moment.

What sets me apart from others is that I am a licensed mental health professional who has joined the movement to decolonize the mental health field. I do this by creating offerings that come from my heart, my intuition, and my personal experience through Obsidian Woman LLC; something I can’t do in my psychotherapy practice because of licensing regulations.

As a licensed psychotherapist and intuitive healer, I offer services designed to help you acknowledge and release emotional pain. I offer 1:1 Coaching through my Soma & Spirit Program: a three-month program that focuses on helping you develop a sense of safety to start somatic healing work. Emotional Limpias: an as-needed service where we have a platica (heart-to-heart conversation) about the things that weigh heavy on your heart, releasing pent-up emotions that cause imbalances in your body and spirit. I also offer free relationship advice on Instagram!

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I started a podcast at the beginning of the year called “The Slow Down Podcast” on Spotify where I answer anonymous questions from my followers about healing and feelings.

I also offer written tarot reflections for those interested in a more spiritual experience with healing.
