Meet Sherika Vidal of Bad Gyal Wigz in Torrance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherika Vidal.

Sherika, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started doing my hair as a teenager. My mother did not allow me to wear weaves or clips in so I started to get creative. When I was about 19, I attempt to make my first wig. I knew how to sew since I was eight years old. I figured it shouldn’t be so hard to make a wig, oh I was wrong. I had no idea I had to used a certain type of wig cap.

I started to watch different YouTube videos to learn how to probably make a wig. I finally made a full head wig and dyed the hair red. I was very excited because I got so much complement on it. I never really thought of making wig a career because I really just enjoy doing it for myself. In 2019 I decided to take a leap of faith on myself to start my own company.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This by far was the most difficult challenge for me because I didn’t know how to start or where to start. I kept asking myself what am I doing? Where am I going to get the money from? I doubted myself so much. The first five months of testing out different vendors was difficult because I blow through so much money. I had to figure out how to hustle and make more money. I didn’t have anyone to help me with anything it was just me. Once I had the ball up and running it trying to do everything myself was even more harder than I expected.

Bad Gyal Wigz – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At Bad Gyal Wigz I specialize in making custom wigs and doing customize coloring. The thing that set me apart from other is I make all my wig from scratch. I do a lot of different colors that a lot of consumers want / need. I am very proud of Bad Gyal Wigz, it started as an idea and now it’s a full-on business. I had grown so much within the last few months. I have stayed consistent with my craft and improve on my work.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I would say success is something within me. I don’t think I have hit my peak on where I would like to be. I am happy with the growth I see within myself. I won’t feel successful till I accomplish all my goals.
