Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelley Acker.
Hi Shelley, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began my career in 2003, fresh out of FIDM with a degree in design, still exploring where I wanted to focus my energy. At the time, I was leaning toward hospitality design, but an unexpected opportunity at the high-end Italian brand Boffi shifted everything. From the moment I walked into the showroom, I was drawn in by the precision, functionality, and elegance of the work and it sparked a deep and lasting love for kitchen and bath design.
That first role became a formative experience. I quickly realized that kitchens and baths offered the perfect intersection of technical challenge, spatial planning, and creative problem-solving. I honed my skills working with a team of talented professionals and high-expectation clients who demanded both refined aesthetics and flawless performance. The experience taught me the importance of thoughtful design, precision, and client service at the highest level.
Over the next decade, I continued to work with other prestigious European brands, including Porro, Molteni, and Leicht. These experiences further deepened my appreciation for functional beauty and meticulous craftsmanship. They also helped solidify my foundation in project management, materials knowledge, and client collaboration.
In 2011, I purchased and renovated my first home, a charming 1930s property full of personality. I approached the project by wanting to honor the original architecture while improving the flow and functionality. It was also a chance to express my own eclectic design sensibility. That renovation became a turning point that reconnected me with the personal side of design and sparked a deeper interest in residential interiors as a whole.
I began taking on small freelance projects in my spare time and gradually evolved into a full-time practice. In 2023, after years of hands-on experience and a steadily growing client base, I launched my own interior design studio, Studio 3727 LLC. Today, I bring a thoughtful, client-centered approach to every project, with a particular passion for kitchens and baths.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road hasn’t always been smooth. It took me a long time to reach the point where I felt ready to take the leap and start my own business. I valued the stability of a steady paycheck, especially with two children to support. The idea of stepping into the unknown felt daunting. There’s so much uncertainty that comes with entrepreneurship: Will the work be consistent? How will I find clients? And of course, self-doubt can creep in.
I launched my business in 2023, which also happened to be the year I went through a divorce. I was navigating life as a single mom and was responsible for providing for myself and my kids without the safety net of a second income. It was a major transition, filled with challenges, but also one of the most empowering decisions I’ve ever made.
We’ve been impressed with Studio 3727 LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Studio 3727 is a full-service residential design studio focused on creating spaces that reflect your vision, lifestyle, and the unique character of your home. While I specialize in kitchen and bath renovations, I also take on full-home projects, designing cohesive and thoughtful interiors that feel both personal and timeless.
I approach each project with attention to detail, a strong sense of space and flow, and a focus on creating environments that are both beautiful and functional. Every home is different, and I tailor each design to work seamlessly with the way you live.
Whether you’re planning a kitchen update, a bathroom renovation, or a whole-home transformation, I’ll lead the process from start to finish, managing the details, guiding decisions, and keeping the experience as smooth and straightforward as possible.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have a strong support system behind me! My family has always been encouraging, but there are four people who stand out.
Both of my sisters played a pivotal role during the transformative years leading up to the launch of Studio 3727. They’ve not only been my biggest cheerleaders, referring me to friends and colleagues in need of a designer, but also my clients. I helped one sister with a full renovation of her home, and I’m currently working on a kitchen remodel for the other. We even partnered on a home flip together, which was a valuable and rewarding experience. Many of those early projects, big and small, came through their support and often led to even more opportunities.
Two of my closest friends, Steph and Heather, have also been incredibly supportive. Steph has always believed in me and continues to advocate for my work. Her husband is a developer, and I’ve consulted on several of his projects. I’ve also worked on their home, and she’s constantly referring me to others. Heather, a fellow designer and close friend, has been a trusted collaborator. We’ve worked together on several projects, and she’s always there to offer thoughtful feedback, business advice, or simply a supportive ear when I need it most. I’m so grateful to have friends who not only believe in my work but
genuinely want to see me succeed.
