Today we’d like to introduce you to Seth Brundle.
Seth, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I got my start in the Entertainment Industry as an intern at Mattel while in undergrad at Morehouse from 2005-2007. I worked in the Creative Advertising and Entertainment departments producing commercials and films for their Hot Wheels and Barbie titles. I always knew I wanted to work in this industry as early as I can remember having been in every school production and pursuing acting as a kid. But it was that first real taste working on actual sets and taking meetings at Universal that confirmed it for me. Mattel was one of the best professional experiences I ever had and was a great introduction into something I was so passionate about.
Mattel had major layoffs and dissolved my department a couple of months before I graduated from Morehouse, so unfortunately I wasn’t offered a job to continue my tenure there. I instead worked in PR and Marketing for the next three years until I decided to quit my job and pursue celebrity wardrobe styling. For the next six years, I worked with people like Chris Brown, Faith Evans and LeToya Luckett.
During that time, I started shooting a web series called ‘Butter + Brown’ on Issa Rae’s YouTube channel with my close friend Leslie Antonoff. We combined our love of food, fashion and comedy to create what we believed to be the perfect cooking show. The year after we got a call from AspireTV to take B+B to television. We started developing ‘Butter + Brown’ for network in 2015, along with an introductory mini-series called ‘Big Screen, Small Bites.’ We’ve been on air with them ever since.
It’s really during these past five years that I’ve truly found my calling for producing original content and being in front of the camera!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This journey has been everything but a smooth road and it still has it’s challenges. When I quit PR and Marketing, I moved back home with my mother who was very supportive of my dreams. The next five years were an equal balance of extreme highs spawned from “living out my dreams,” working with some of the industry’s biggest talent and doing work I was proud of; and extreme depression birthed by poverty, anxiety and self-doubt. Being a freelance creative is TOUGH. In most instances, you have to really grind to get your name out there and have your work recognized. That means doing a lot of things for free to build up your portfolio and network.
One of my lowest points was not having worked for over three months, having no money at all and running out of gas on the 101 freeway on my way to hang out with friends who were going to give me gas money when I arrived. I sat on the side of the road and cried for an hour. I had such a sense of defeat. I wanted to give up on my dreams. I wanted to give up on life. I wanted to die.
Depression and boardline alcoholism is a dangerous combination. The hardest times have taught me that although I don’t want to do anything else with my life but this, I also have to have a firm sense of what’s important.
“Making it” is not. Happiness absolutely is the key to it all.
Please tell us about The BrundleFly Group.
The BrundleFly Group is my one-man production company. I actually JUST filed my official paperwork. I’m a television personality, executive producer, writer and content creator who specializes in unscripted lifestyle programming. I’m most known for my hit series, ‘Butter + Brown’ on AspireTV. What I’m most proud of is having already produced and starred in 5 series with two others on the way (that I know of). What sets me apart is that I’m a true multi-hyphenate. It’s rare that you find someone who does all four of the aforementioned and does them well. In most instances, it’s just a title. I wear all of those hats.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t know that I’d do anything differently. I always joke with my friends that I would have been a software engineering major instead of marketing. At least that way I would have been able to freelance as a web designer and make great money on the side instead of struggling the way I had in the past when work was slow. But struggle has given so much color and perspective to my journey. I’m much better for it.
