Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Grant.
Hi Sam, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Brazil, grew up in Toronto and spent several years living in Australia before settling in Los Angeles, which is home base for Sam Grant Productions today. Moving that much taught me how to walk into unfamiliar rooms, read people quickly and make them feel comfortable. That turned out to be the core of my job.
I started out as a photographer and over time expanded into directing commercials, so today I work as a Los Angeles director and photographer for brands, agencies and artists. My commercial work includes projects for SKIL, Coca-Cola, Grainger and Disney, along with campaigns, events and brand activations across the country.
Music has always been the other half of my story. I’m a lifelong metal fan. A lot of my favorite work lives in that world: shooting bands like Suicidal Tendencies, interviewing Zakk Wylde for my YouTube channel and an ongoing project with Nick Oliveri of Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss. That access to music and culture shapes how I approach brand work too. I’m always looking for the real moment, not the staged one.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all. I think that’s true for anyone building a creative business on their own. For a long time nearly all of my work came through referrals. That’s a great sign because it means clients trust you and talk about you. The downside is that you’re not fully in control of your pipeline. Some months were packed and others were quiet.
What changed things was treating the business like a business. Learning how to design a strong treatment has made a huge difference in how I pitch and how clients see me. I also put together case studies to show potential clients exactly what I deliver. More than anything though, it comes down to relationships. I go above and beyond on every job and invest in people for the long term, not just for one project. That’s what keeps the work coming back.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Most of my work sits where brands and culture meet. I direct commercials and branded content from concept and treatment through to final delivery. I also shoot campaigns, product, lifestyle, events and brand activations. Because I work across stills and motion, I understand what each side needs. That means a campaign’s photo and video can come from a single vision instead of two separate ones.
What sets me apart is the music side of my work. Photographing and filming musicians on stage and behind the scenes trains you to work fast, read the room and earn trust with people who are naturally guarded. I bring that same energy to commercial sets, whether it’s a power tool spot or a holiday campaign. People relax and the work feels real.
I’m most proud of the projects that bridge those two worlds, like the SKIL commercial I directed in Chicago and my interview with Zakk Wylde, which passed 100,000 views in its first week.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Staying calm on set. Shoots rarely go exactly to plan. The people around you take their cue from you. If I’m steady, the talent relaxes, the crew stays focused and the client trusts the process.
