Today we’d like to introduce you to Roya Javaherchi.
Hi Roya, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey began long before Dateolate became a reality. I was born and raised in Iran, where food, family gatherings, and hospitality are always an important part of the culture. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Food Science Engineering and worked with well-known food companies, gaining valuable experience in the industry back in Iran.
In 2013, I immigrated to the United States, bringing with me my education, experience, dreams, and determination to build a new chapter of my life. I later earned my master’s degree in Accountancy and began working in corporate America. Although my professional path took me into accounting, my passion for food, especially chocolate, never faded.
The inspiration behind Dateolate is deeply personal and comes from my family.
My mother has diabetes, and following her doctor’s recommendation, dates became a familiar part of our household as an alternative to traditional sweets. We would enjoy them with our morning coffee, afternoon tea, and during family gatherings. Growing up with this tradition, I developed a deep appreciation for dates and their natural sweetness.
As someone with a background in food science and a lifelong love of chocolate, I began wondering: What if I could bring these two wonderful ingredients together and create something unique, delicious, and meaningful?
That simple question eventually became the foundation of Dateolate.
However, having an idea and turning it into a real business are two very different things!
Like many entrepreneurs, I couldn’t leave my full-time job overnight to pursue my dream. I had responsibilities, and I knew building a business would require time, financial commitment, patience, and a great deal of determination.
So I started step by step, while continuing my corporate career. I spent countless hours researching, developing recipes, understanding regulations, obtaining licenses, finding suppliers, designing packaging, and learning the many details involved in launching a food business in California.
There were certainly challenges along the way, but I never gave up on the idea.
Eventually, I reached a point where I decided to leave my corporate career and dedicate myself to building my business.
Today, I am proud to offer Dateolate, a premium dark chocolate filled with naturally sweet California-grown Medjool dates. Our products are vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free, combining rich dark chocolate with the natural sweetness of dates.
What makes Dateolate especially meaningful to me is that it connects my personal story, my cultural roots, , and my entrepreneurial journey.
Seeing Dateolate on store shelves and hearing from customers who enjoy our chocolates has been incredibly rewarding. Every positive message reminds me why I started this journey.
Of course, entrepreneurship is never a straight road. There are always new challenges. But every challenge has taught me something valuable.
As an immigrant and Americans by choice ,I am especially grateful for the opportunities I’ve had in the United States to turn an idea into a business. I believe entrepreneurship is not simply about creating a product; it’s about having the courage to pursue something you believe in, even when the journey is uncertain.
Today, I continue working to grow Dateolate, introduce our products to more customers and retailers, and build a brand that represents quality, creativity, and a meaningful story.
If there is one thing my journey has taught me, it is that dreams don’t have an expiration date. Sometimes they take years to become reality, but with persistence, hard work, and belief in your vision, an idea can eventually become something real.
And for me, that dream became Dateolate.
One Bite, Pure Delight!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wish I could say it has been a smooth road, but absolutely not! I believe every entrepreneur faces challenges, and my journey with Dateolate has certainly been no exception.
One of my biggest challenges was turning an idea into a real business while working a full-time corporate job. I had financial responsibilities, so I couldn’t simply quit my job overnight. I had to build everything step by step, spending evenings and weekends on product development, licensing, and learning the realities of running a food business.
Even with my background in Food Science and Accountancy, I quickly learned that entrepreneurship requires wearing many hats. From production and quality control to marketing, sales, finances, and customer service, there is always something new to learn.
Another challenge has been maintaining consistent quality while managing rising production and ingredient costs. Working with natural ingredients, especially California-grown Medjool dates, requires extra attention because their texture and moisture can vary.
Getting into more stores has also been challenging. As a small business without a large marketing budget, you have to work twice as hard to introduce your product, build relationships, and earn customers’ trust. Sometimes you hear many “no’s” before finally hearing a “yes.”
As an immigrant , I also had to navigate a new business environment and build the network from the ground up.
There have certainly been moments of frustration, exhaustion, and uncertainty. But every challenge has taught me something valuable.
Today, as Dateolate continues to grow and we transition toward larger-scale manufacturing, I know new challenges will come. However, I have learned to see them as opportunities to grow.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that passion may inspire you to start a business, but persistence, discipline, and adaptability are what keep it going.
We’ve been impressed with Dateolate, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
