Meet Rowell Concepcion of Binata Millinery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rowell Concepcion.

Hi Rowell, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
It all started during my first trip to The Philippines. My parents took me aside and shared their dream for me. It was not to become a doctor or a lawyer but to start a business to help the community – our community. This was the moment everything clicked, and I felt a sense of pride and purpose. The Philippines has a rich culture and history, but it is often overlooked in Western societies, especially when it comes to art and fashion. I have made it my mission to merge my passion to help artisans in my parents’ home provinces while establishing a millinery brand in the US. After the passing of my dad from Covid, I officially launched my brand in August 2020 as a tribute to him and a nod to my Filipino American heritage. Binata is a Filipino word that signifies a free spirit. I love creating hats for those that aren’t afraid to stand out and be completely themselves.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been winding but always rewarding. I have handmade every hat I have sold since launching. It has been a dream and a labor of love in every sense of the phrase. It’s also been more sleepless nights than I care to admit. The current challenge I am working on is finding help for production as my brand grows. I like to tackle things one by one, and I am looking forward to getting my production processes ironed out this year.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Binata Millinery?
Binata Millinery is a hat label that focuses on old-world craftsmanship to help the fashion-forward turn their daily outfits into head-turners. Every hat is handmade using traditional millinery techniques and responsibly sourced materials. Binata Millinery is inspired by all things playful, quirky, and whimsical.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I’m a lukewarm risk-taker. I almost always take calculated risks. Prior to launching my millinery business, I worked in the fashion industry learning the business side of fashion, and I made sure to save enough to be able to support myself while chasing the dream. I took the leap with my brand because I have a mission to help the Filipino American community as well as seeing a hole in the industry that I believe my artistry can fill. I do believe everyone has to take risks and get out of their comfort zone to achieve the things they want in life. It’s terrifying but necessary, especially in an art/fashion business.
