Meet Roshawn Allen of Turestrl in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roshawn Allen.

Roshawn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been drawing my entire life but The way I got introduced to visual arts was through my high school graphic design teacher Ms. Sloan at Evanston Township H.S. She persuaded me to join the career shadow program and I was given the opportunity to shadow a senior designer that helped me to see that visual arts was even a real career to peruse. I later attended Columbia College Chicago majoring in Fine Arts and minored in psychology. By my junior year, I became a creative designer at Frontline Distribution Chicago designing the cover art for vintage books that were licensed and republished.

One year later, I was able to open my first office at Lacuna Art lofts in Chicago where I was able to meet my longtime friend Dilla who at the time was The manager of Jeremih and was able to create a lot of his artwork that helped to enhance my portfolio and professional connects. I also received my first award for designing the cover art for the double platinum track “Planes” by Jeremih featuring J. Cole. Since then I’ve received two more awards within the music industry including the track “My Beyoncé” by Lil Durk ft. Dej Loaf. I also now creative direct for two time NBA All-Star Baron Davis’s company “LAUNFD.” Within my company, I now created my own Skate/Clothing line and preparing for my second gallery. This journey has been an extreme emotional and physical roller coaster. It has taught me patience and the true value of hard work! I will continue this journey to inspire kids that there is more than one way to achieve success just stick to it and never be afraid to highlight or brand yourself within any industry.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The journey has definitely been a struggle. Dealing with clients and their demands, Time management and the learning of my own capabilities. The hugest struggle of all was learning that creativity cannot be compared to another’s but how to bring quality to your own aesthetic so that the world may one day learn to appreciate it.

Turestrl, Inc. – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?

I use conversation with the consumer to establish color psychology and composition of designs delivered so that they can see themselves within it.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me is the freedom to do what you love and have the ability to serve your community with that ability and create a demand for said ability. So in my eyes, I am extremely successful.
