Today we’d like to introduce you to Roman Toporov.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
It all started with a passion to draw since my childhood pencils and paper were my favorite toys. I graduated from an Art School where I learned the fundamentals of drawing.
Also from a very young age, I knew that I’m going to have tattoos but never thought that I’m going to become a tattoo artist. At one point in my life, I realized that I’m not happy with it because I had a regular office job which wasn’t the path that I wanted for myself. So I started thinking about what profession would reflect the most my passion to create and draw and it was tattooing.
I bought my first tattoo machine and supplies and started tattooing my friends, after a month of learning I got a part time job in a local Tattoo Shop. Shortly after that I moved to Los Angeles were tattooing became my profession. Now I’m studying for Graphic design which helps me to involve digital tools in creating tattoo designs.
Please tell us about your art.
I do tattoos. I feel like tattoos is a great way of self-expression, something that makes you an individual. The idea behind the tattoo might be very meaningful and personal or it could serve only one purpose – to decorate the body and it’s totally fine. I feel grateful that people reach out to me to get something permanent on their skin and each time I do my best to turn their idea into a tattoo design with my own twist on it.
I want to believe that it makes my clients at least a little bit happier and maybe makes them feel more confident. My main inspiration for my tattoo designs are pen-and-ink illustrations and old book illustrations.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I feel like we live in the best era for all kinds of artists right now. You have a freedom to create what you love and there is so many ways to share it with the audience like internet, exhibitions and such.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
So far Instagram is the main platform where I share my work. Also, I’m currently working on my website.
