Meet Rita Earl Blackwell of Rita Earl Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rita Earl Blackwell.

Rita, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
An animal lover my whole life, I found a way to help homeless animals with my camera. I am both passionate about photography and animal welfare.

I began photographing dogs for local Los Angeles shelters and rescue groups in hopes of helping them find forever homes. Often shelter pets are seen as ‘defective’ and I hope to show them in a different light. One not as ‘sad’, where people feel sorry for them, but a photo that will make they see the dog as part of their family.

I hope to also show the shelter as a place filled with an endless abundance of unconditional love, instead of a tragically sad place that people ‘can’t go to’ for fear of their heartbreaking. This has evolved in me becoming a volunteer with the Los Angeles Animal Services and building a large following of animal lovers and rescuers who I can network these pets too.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The struggles I face in this work that I do is not being able to help them all……

Rita Earl Photography is a pet and family portrait business. I specialize in people with their pets.

I am most proud of the time I spend volunteering with approximately 5 animals shelters and over 15 rescue groups throughout Southern California.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I come from a large family back in New York. I have 7 siblings, so my favorite memory would be time spent with them.
