Meet Rick Duenas of Performance Chiropractic in Lancaster

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rick Duenas.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in East Los Angeles and come from a small loving family of four (mother, father, sister, and myself). My father was a long-haul trucker and my mother was employed as a librarian’s assistant at a local library.

After completing high school, I attended the University of California in Santa Barbara, where I studied Biological Sciences. During my 4 years of schooling there, I was also employed as an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) in an Advanced Life Support ambulance unit and helped service emergency medical calls. It was then that I decided I wanted to pursue a career in health.

It so happened that the paramedics and firefighters I worked with were all plagued with neck pain, back pain, joint pain, and other health issues. As such, they would all visit a local chiropractor who would work wonders with them and keep them functional.

This sparked an interest in becoming a chiropractor. After doing some research and learning the health philosophy of the profession, I was convinced this would be my calling.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Performance Chiropractic story. Tell us more about the business.
At Performance Chiropractic our perspective to health care has been shaped over the years and has evolved to what it is now. To be truly “healthy” requires a multifaceted approach and it’s only when a doctor is able to teach this concept and when patients finally understand the fact that they themselves are largely responsible for the improvement of their own health………that the magic begins.

This is not an easy task!

Our current health care system, unfortunately, embodies that health comes from a pill. There is nothing more ironic than a patient taking a medication for a condition when that very same condition is perpetuated by the poor lifestyle choices that he/she is making daily, often including poor diet, little to no exercise, exposure to toxins, minimal efforts in well-documented preventative health care strategies, etc.

What pains us is that patients are usually unaware of this.

We believe that whatever success we have had to date stems from the fact that we DO take a comprehensive approach to care. We take care of the spine and nervous system through traditional chiropractic approaches. We have equipment that allows us to correct abnormal postures. We fit custom orthotics to help give the body a more stable foundation. We have several well-experienced massage therapists and trainers in our office that work with our clients in various applied ways. We run a variety of blood labs and help normalize abnormal markers through diet and supplementation. We teach trigger-point therapy classes so as to empower patients to self-manage their pain with proven manual procedures rather than just taking toxic medications on impulse. We empower our patients on various aspects of health through education, by having an open-door policy, and by staying in constant communication with them as we help navigate them in their journey towards better health.

We work with the spine and the nervous system, which is the “command center” of our body.

The cliché of “the harder your work, the luckier you get” couldn’t be any more true. We are so passionate about what we do that we strive daily to learn and learn more about our field and to perfect what we already do technically. It truly is never ending and we are quite OK with that since, not only do we enjoy the process, but we actually thrive on it! Ultimately, the better we get as an office and as a functional team, each responsible for the different aspect of the patient’s care, the more we are able to help these patients reach their health goals.
